Amsterdam... what a city! I'm from England, where you shouldn't wear hats indoors, smoking in public is frowned upon (and even banned in some places) and people give you odd looks if you wear sunglasses in the winter. You can do literally anything in Amsterdam, in fact if you don't do those things listed above at least once...that's when you get the odd looks! A city where anything goes.
Psychopathic cyclists and ladies of the day and night
To get to the hostel I was almost killed twice by ruthless, free-roaming cyclists and almost died of a heart attack when a great big tram swung round the corner at me. I also passed a sex museum, a few 'coffee' shops and, bizarrely enough, a McDonalds!!! Honestly, it was the most eclectic, random and surprising walk a polite(?) English girl from the country could have made! And that was before we decided to explore the area! Don't get me wrong...I was expecting to see a few prostitutes, but when I walked passed a window to find myself looking into a pair of open legs... before lunch, I was slightly more than shocked! But it's all part of its irresistible charm!
You fit in immediately and everyone is so friendly! The staff at the flying pig hostel were so welcoming and went out of their way to help us whenever! Especially when one of the guys I'd come with decided to leave a special something in the toilet, on top of a blockage of tissue! I must say the sight wasn't too pleasant! The staff came and relieved the girls of the torture as soon as we plucked up the courage to tell them, not only that...but we all got a free drink voucher to use in the downstairs bar! Everyday we woke up, ate breakfast, did something cultural, got stoned, looked around town, came home, went out for dinner, drank a few Heinekens, got stoned, went to the red light district and watched a sex show (two euros for two mins) came home and went to bed!!! And that was our daily routine!
We were all so depressed when we got home and realised, in fact, how taboo all these things were.... our friends thought we were weird because we had watched horse porn! (At the time...we found that quite subtle compared to some of the stuff we'd seen in 3d!). And we had to make do with our dvd's for our nightly fix!!!!! Overall...Amsterdam is the best city in the world EVER!!!!! and you'd be stupid to pass up a visit! I've never seen or heard of anything like it! I think I may even write to Tony Blair to ask if he can make a new law for all humans to go there at least once in their lives! Do you know what...words can't even express how fun it is.
