Things To Do in Amsterdam - Events for September 2010

Eva - Beds and Bars - Correspondant

Although it seems that summer is almost over it is still going strong in and around Amsterdam. Here’s a breakdown of the various festivals coming up in September.

West Beach Film Festival ‐ Until September 18

Well into September you can head to Amsterdam's Sloterplas to catch films outside on these sultry Amsterdam evenings, and it's all free! For four weekends, the open‐air cinema will be installed next to the Sloterparkbad swimming pool in Amsterdam Nieuw‐West. Grab a drink and a snack, sit back, relax and enjoy a range of classic, and modern films on the huge screen. If Mother Nature refuses to play ball and rain clouds threaten, the show still goes on with films screened inside. Be warned though ‐ seats are limited so come along early to avoid disappointment.

Dutch Theatre Festival ‐ September 2 to 12, 2010

Meet the theatre world during the Dutch Theatre Festival in Amsterdam, at the point in September that marks the end of the old and the beginning of the new, theatre season. The festival will feature the ten best performances of the season, the performances nominated for the Theatre Prize (awarded by the public) and a highly varied fringe programme full of master classes, discussions and entertainment.

Robodock

Robodock is a theatrical and musical open‐air spectacle. In this edition there will be a dynamic program of audio and visual performances, between high noon and late evening. This year’s theme is the Phoenix ‐ with a hypnotising and industrial fairytale set on the slope of the NDSM wharf. After a century of adventures, the mythological firebird has landed at Robodock and her nest is drifting on the waves. In a cacophony of mechanical soundscapes, blazing fire sculptures and music from all over the globe, the ancient bird is preparing for her last big performance!

GRID ‐ September 26 to November 7, 2010

This is the fourth edition of the GRID International photography event dedicated to a culture of contemporary images. The event will take place in Amsterdam and the surrounding metropolitan region with around 60 projects and presentations, representing at least 25 countries.

Madness and Arts Festival (Haarlem) ‐ September 24 until October 3, 2010

For ten days the cultural institutions of Haarlem (a town close To Amsterdam) will be bursting at the seams with art installations that are all about the relationship between art and madness. After the Toronto showcase in 2003 and Münster in 2006, the festival is coming to Haarlem! So do all artists always have a screw loose? Is the work of a 'crazy' artist purer and more authentic than that of professional artist? History teaches us that the perception of art and madness is constantly changing. What was considered insane some time ago, can today be seen as exceptional creative talent. And maybe tomorrow ‐ again as the musings of a mental patient. That aside, this, the third Madness and Arts Festival, explores the theme in an extensive program of theatre, dance, film, music, art, literature, poetry, debate and meetings.

International Gamelan Festival Amsterdam

The International Gamelan Festival Amsterdam presents music and dance from Indonesia, different world premieres and the absolute best from Java and Bali. The 2010 festival consists of two principal parts ‐ Opera Java (September 2 to 5, 2010) and three gamelan presentations from Java and Bali (September 9, 10 and 11, 2010), performed in the monumental Light Hall of the Tropenmuseum.
