Events for December 2009

Eva - Beds and Bars - Correspondant Feeling sick and tired of spending Christmas in a commercial travel destination where it’s impossible to wander around the Christmas market because of the crowd? Then come to Amsterdam ‐ where the village atmosphere is even more charming during the festive season! The streets and canals have twinkling lights everywhere, there’s a skating ring on the Leidse Square and lots of Christmas treats to be found too!

World Christmas Circus

Humour, excitement, beauty, sensation and illusions ‐ these are the mottos of the coming World Christmas Circus at the Royal Theatre Carrè . The venue will once again be transformed into the world’s most beautiful circus palace, with performances between December 18, 2009, and January 3, 2010.

Ice Skating

Holland might be a small country but we can be big at some things and one of them is skating! You might not break the speed record on the ice rinks in town, but it’s still good fun! A small rink tucked between cafés on Leidseplein was the first to appear in November, but by mid December two more rinks will be open. One is at Westerpark and the other is in the shadow of the Rijksmuseum, on the reflecting pool at Museum Square.

A Special Christmas Market

On Sunday December 13, you’ll find a Christmas Market with loads of Christmas decorations, a little ice skating rink, fire barges and glühwein (spicy wine) ‐ in the culture park ‐ Westergasfabriek. Designers, artists and craft experts will sell their products, including toys, clothes, vintage fun, jewels, furniture, art and other cultural delicacies. The market is open between 12.00 and 18.00, and it’s free!

Pink Christmas

This year Amsterdam will host a special pink Christmas event! From December 17 to December 27, Amsterdam’s city centre will be decorated in nothing but pink! The line up includes a Christmas market and a Christmas Choir festival! The most up‐to date program is available online at pinkchristmas.nl.
