Chinese New Year - January and February 2009

Although Chinese New Year doesn’t officially begin until February the Chinese community in Amsterdam always start the party a month early - to coincide with local Dutch and tourist folk, who are still enjoying their holidays. You’ll find all the merriment focused around the Nieuwmarkt. This is Amsterdam's little Chinatown, located next door to St Christopher’s Inn and the red light district.

Oasis @ The Heineken Music Hall - January 21 and 22, 2009

No introduction needed for legendary English rock band Oasis who roll into Amsterdam this January for two very special nights - inside the famous Heineken Music Hall. Oasis formed back in 1991 and by the late nineties the Gallagher brothers had taken the music industry by storm, racking up eight UK chart toppers and over 50 million record sales, worldwide. Tickets for this gig are likely to sell out quickly so browse the official Heineken Music Hall website as soon as you can to reserve yourself a seat.

Amsterdam Fashion Week - January 24 to February 1, 2009

For five days at the end of January Amsterdam will be sucking in its belly, taking a shower and slipping into its best threads, ready for Amsterdam Fashion Week! The event includes a mixture of trade exhibitions, presentations, industry lectures, cinematic screenings and a variety of uber stylish fashion parties, showcased inside many different venues all over the city. You should of course expect plenty of fashionable names to launch new collections on the Westergasfabriek catwalk!

Ajax Amsterdam versus SC Heerenveen - January 31, 2009

After a tricky start to the 2008 and 2009 Dutch football season, Ajax have spent much of October and November picking up much needed points. This means that they are now in a position to challenge surprise league leaders AZ Alkmaar for the Eredivisie title. Tickets for the 8.45pm kick off against SC Heerenveen (a team currently occupying a mid-table position) are presently available from the club website or the stadium ticket office. If you’re travelling from Central Station you’ll find that the best way to get to the Amsterdam Arena is via Metro lines 50 or 54.

The Winston Kingdom - January 2009

The Winston Kingdom is a superbly convenient nightclub for Indie travellers staying at St Christopher’s. It is of course next door to the hostel and in January there’s a massive selection of tune filled nights ‐ all aimed at your finely tuned ear drums. Not to ruin the entire agenda but highlights this month include The Allegro’s EP Release Party on January 3, between 21.00 and 04.00. This promises to be a mix of Pop, Rock, Blues and Indie, all contained on the EP entitled ‐ I Like Your style. Later in the month on January 27, be sure to catch the Amsterdam Underground Collective between 20.00 and 23.00. For one night only you can catch Chuck Regan live - in true Bruce Springsteen style!
