With Summer hitting Amsterdam in June, it’s time to get outdoors and experience the best in festivals and sporting activities. Whether it’s music, the arts or sport that tickles your fancy, there’s sure to be something for everyone on the Amsterdam summer program.

Vondelpark Open Air Theatre ‐June 7 to August 23, 2009

Sunday June 7 will mark the beginning of the summer program of the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre. With a standard weekly program, this theatre really does cater for all ages and tastes. Thursdays will showcase some classical music, while Fridays will keep the dance enthusiasts entertained. Children’s performances, music theatre and cabaret will take place on Saturdays, with Sunday thrown in as something of a mixed bag. A whole bunch of musicians will also be composing a day program to be presented on five Sunday afternoons.

The Amsterdam Roots Festival ‐ June 13 to 20, 2009

For a decade the Amsterdam Roots Festival, has been one of the leading international music festivals and this year venues around the city, including Concertgebouw and Oosterpark, will host a massively diverse music program. The Roots Open Air festival is all set to take place in Oosterpark and will showcase performances from around 40 bands, spread across seven stages.

Dutch Moto Grand Prix ‐ June 27, 2009

Amsterdam is a pretty fast paced city, but visitors in June are given the opportunity to crank it up a gear and escape to an event where speed really is the name of the game. Taking place just 200km (nothing with European motorways and high speed trains) from Schipol Airport in Amsterdam, the Dutch Moto GP is a fantastic annual event for fans visiting the Netherlands. The circuit, just south of Assen in the De Haar district, has hosted the Dutch Tourist Trophy (motorbike title) since 1949. Activities kick off in Assen on June 25, but it’s Saturday’s (June 27) Moto GP that draws the big crowds. With some of the top riders from around the world lined up to hit the track, spectators are guaranteed a very noisy and enjoyable day.

Open Garden Days ‐ June 19 to 21, 2009

For three days in June, 25 private gardens will be open to the public ‐ thanks to the Canal Museums of Amsterdam. Many of the gardens, hidden behind the stately facades and canals of Amsterdam, were designed by renowned architects and even though the entry fee is €15, all profits will go to charity.

Holland Festival ‐ June 4 to 28, 2009

This yearly arts festival is the highlight of the cultural calendar in the Netherlands, and includes 30 art, music, opera, theatre and dance productions. The hub for the festival is Stadsschouwburg on Leidseplein and bookings can be made there ‐ for everything from Pop music to topical, high drama performances.

AC/DC Black Ice Tour ‐ June 23, 2009

The thunder from down under will be hitting Amsterdam on June 23, 2009. Ticket holders will get to see one of the world’s best rock groups on one of the world’s biggest stages ‐ the Amsterdam Arena. This concert is the fourth to last on AC/DC’s European Black Ice Tour and the Stadium is sure to be full of hardcore fans, jumping around to their favourite tracks.

Ordina Open ‐ June 14 to 20, 2009

The only grass tennis tournament in the Netherlands ‐ the Ordina Open, always attracts some of the tennis world’s top stars. This year will be no different and fans will be treated to an exhibition match starring former world number one, Kim Clijsters. The tournament takes place about an hour from Amsterdam central, in Rosmalen.

Story Highlights

Holland Festival ‐ June 5 to June 27, 2009

The Holland Festival is the most prestigious festival in the Netherlands, showcasing a selection of national and international theatre, music and dance at various locations across Amsterdam. The 2009 edition is from the June 5 until the June 27, 2009.

Amsterdam Roots Festival – June 21, 2009

This free festival will take place in the Oosterpark from 12 noon until 9.30pm. Enjoy a whole day filled with music on seven stages ‐ with both national and international bands, the latest talent from Amsterdam, DJs, dance workshops, a big world market and more! This year the festival focuses on the theme of the Mediterranean ‐ a crossroads of culture. Confirmed international bands include Natacha Atlas and The Mazeeka Ensemble, Souad Massi, Speed Caravan, Son de la Frontera and Roy Paci, and Aretuska.

Amsterdam Open Garden Days – From June 25, 2009

If you’re looking for a quieter way to spend you day in Amsterdam but you still want a peek at the local culture, then a visit to one of Amsterdam’s hidden gardens during the Amsterdam Open Garden Days is a must. In the third weekend of June ¬most private¬ gardens will be open to the public ‐ some of them for the first time. The gardens, hidden behind the stately facades and canals of Amsterdam, are truly an oasis to make the most of. Many of them were designed by renowned architects too!

Amsterdam Culinair – From June 18 to June 21, 2009

When you get hungry after all the festivals and strolling through the gardens, you can visit Amsterdam Culinair. Between June 18 and June 21 the Museumsquare will be transferred in to a giant open air restaurant. Restaurants from all over Amsterdam will, temporarily, open a mini restaurant on the square! Visitors can sample dishes from various kitchens at wallet friendly prices. There will also be music and assorted acts to make this outdoor dining experience an unforgettable one.
