Events for March 2010

Eva - Beds and Bars - Correspondant

Although spring is supposed to start this month it looks like winter is here to stay a little longer. So in this month’s edition we’re focussing on the indoor events and also, a few handy tips on how to save money along the way.

5 Days Off ‐ March 3 to 7, 2010

5 days off is THE leading Electronic music festival in Europe. It stretches from March 3 to March 7 and there are a lot of big names already lined up including Groove Armada, Vitalic, Miss Kittin, Boemklatsch, Hot Chip and many more! Also as the Flying Pig Uptown is only on a five minute walk away from the Melkweg and Paradiso venues where the gigs are going ahead, the very kind Flying Pigs have lined up a great deal for you guys. If you buy a passe‐partout for the whole festival, you get 25% off your Flying Pig accommodation. Even if you decide that five days is too much and you don’t go to the whole thing, you’ll still get 10% off your accommodation! How lovely.

Swap and the City

Are you in need of a new wardrobe but lacking in the funds department? Well don’t worry because you can always pay a visit to Swap and the City. Why you ask? Because swapping is the new shopping! How does it work you say? Just show up with your unwanted clothes and then leave a little later with a bag of new items. There’s no limit on how many items you can take home with you ‐ just bring a minimum of five items and leave with whatever you want! Tickets to get in are €20 and the number of tickets are limited so buy yours in advance online at www.swapandthecity.com. Said ticket includes free beauty treatments, snacks, a welcome cocktail and a generously packed goodie bag, to take home.

WOMEN Inc Festival ‐ March 1 to 6, 2010

If you can’t make it to Swap and the City, don’t worry because there’s another option! It’s called the Ec‐Fabs Fashion Party and Swap Meet, it’s held on Friday March 5, 2010 and it’s part of the WOMEN Inc Festival. From March 1 to March 6 WOMEN Inc. will celebrate all things female! There will be speed dating sessions and talks on feminism, independence and abortion. The music will be supplied by local singers and DJs, documentaries and feature films will be shown and fashion shows, art expos and markets will be on display. Also expect theatre, cabaret and comedy, plus workshops on dancing, cookery and careers.

Broken Dutch ‐ Until March 31, 2010

Broken Dutch is an independent art project made up of portrait photographs, combined with text. This is a concept that was conceived during a nationalisation programme in Amsterdam. The exhibition follows the progress of newcomers to the city (and the country), how they got along in learning the language and how generally, they found their feet in Amsterdam. It explores both the bitter and the sweet of picking up a new language in a foreign country. Iric Chun Watson the artist behind the project, is a true insider amongst these Amsterdammers‐to‐be.  Broken Dutch runs at Amsterdam’s Public Library until March 31, 2010.
