Thailand Grand Festival - September 6 and 7, 2008
The Thai Ambassador and the Thai community in the Netherlands gather in early September for the annual Thailand Grand Festival. The free festival is located in the city centre on the Beursplein - a five minute walk from Centraal Station or Dam Square.
The festival has been held in the city since 2005 and provides visitors with a diverse glimpse into genuine Thai culture - with a selection of traditional food stalls, music stages, time-honoured dance performances, regional flowers and exotic fruit carvings. During the festival many of the best Thai restaurants in the city will be serving up fantastic dishes at great prices.
International Broadcasting Convention - September 11 to 16, 2008
In a nutshell the IBC is an electronic media exhibition that showcases the next generation of broadcast technology to the press, the corporate world and the general public. The convention attracts more than a thousand companies every year and there will be an abundance of interactive technology on display for visitors to play with.
Attendees will get a glimpse of prototype digital signage (technology set to transform shop windows into moving advertisements) and on September 15, the first live motion picture to be shot in digital 3D (Journey to the Center of the Earth) will be shown on the big screen, inside the convention hall. The exhibition is free but if you want a place you need to register on the IBC website.
The exhibition is held in the RAI centre. The best way to get here is to jump on tram 51 at Centraal station. This will get you to Amsterdam RAI station in about ten minutes.
Ajax Amsterdam V Roda JC - September 14, 2008
On September 14, 2008, top European Football Club - Ajax Amsterdam will play their first home game of the season against Roda JC at the huge, 55,000 capacity, Amsterdam Arena. The stadium is only a few miles from Centraal Station and can easily be reached on metro line 54, which runs toward Gein. Tickets can be purchased from the Stadium ticket office.
Jordaan Festival, September 19 to 21, 2008
Jordaan is one of the older areas of Amsterdam and a former working class suburb of the city. Nowadays Jordaan has a rather youthful vibe - even more so when the annual street festival is in full swing.
The Jordaan street festival was born in the seventies and over the past thirty or so years, has grown rapidly in size and status. Today it attracts visitors from all over the world, but crucially it's never forgotten its history or purpose. The event is free and throbs with live music performances, beat bands, a flea market and there's even an auction. Finding Jordaan is easy. Head west on tram line 2 for approximately five minutes.
C-Jay Album Release Party @ Club NL, September 25, 2008
Club NL is a renowned Amsterdam nightclub located in the heart of Amsterdam's cool, club land - a few hundred metres from Dam Square on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal. The doors are open every night of the week and the polished décor attracts a well-groomed crowd. However a few good humoured stragglers like me and Mick Jagger do manage to get in from time to time.
In recent years Club NL has evolved from a lounge bar into a serious House and Techno venue, and in late September it will play host to renowned, local Techno DJ and Producer, C-Jay. This in fact will be a party to honour the launch of his new album. The event is free so get inside and relax among the good people sipping cocktails at the chic bar. Then when you're sufficiently socially lubricated, rise up and hitch hike onto the dance floor in appreciation of some rather, well constructed beats.
