Biking Time
The Netherlands is undeniably a cycling country ‐ bikes are ten a penny in Amsterdam and there’s nowhere else in the World where people enjoy peddle power quite so much. About forty percent of all journeys in the city are made by bike, making it one do the most pooular, safe and efficient ways to get from A to B. Bikes can be rented in every part of the city ‐ specifically the areas around Central Station, the Leidseplein and the Dam. You can rent for a minimum of three hours a day and the average price you should pay for a day is around €8. You can also rent touring bikes, tandems, children’s bicycles and for longer distances you can easily pick up a moped or a scooter.
Elephants in Amsterdam
If you come to town in September or October you might notice some strange and rather large creatures in certain squares and streets. Do not be afraid ‐ this is all part of the Elephant Parade ‐ an artistic endeavour to charitably help the plight of Asian elephants. More than 100 elephant replicas will be trudging into the city along with many life‐sized models of baby elephants and three‐dimensional artistic canvases, all kitted out with some fine finishing touches from local and internationally renowned artists, and designers. You can enjoy the elephants between September 5 and October 31, 2009.
Street Organ Festival
The Amsterdam Draaiorgelfestival (Street Organ Festival) on September 12, 2009 will bring together 18 street organs from all over the Netherlands ‐ right into the heart of Amsterdam. Street organs are just as much a part of life in Amsterdam as the canals and this festival is all set to showcase that, with backup from an Amsterdam choir, singing songs about the beautiful city. It all kicks off at 10.00.
Open Air Cinema ‐ SunSunsets Overhoeks
From September 2 until September 6, 2009 the third edition of Sunsets will be held in Overhoeks. This open‐air festival in the Northern IJ‐oever will showcase contemporary and classic films, staring the greats and the not so well known stars.
Amsterdam ArtZuid
The old South area of the city (Oud Zuid) is a major draw all year round. It’s easily accessible by trams 24, 16 and 5 from Amsterdam Central Station and the WTC ‐ South Station. When you’re in the area be sure to visit the old south area before October 26, 2009. Until this point ArtZuid 2009 is bringing haute design to the green lanes of the Apollo and the Minervalaan. Architects Roberto Meyer and artist Michiel Romeyn have chosen a stunning combination of 30 sculptures for this one and they’re certain to be appreciated by all audiences.
Alongside international classics such as Rodin and Zadkine, the duo will also present pieces from Paul McCarthy, Franz West, Panamarenko, Tajiri and Joep van Lieshout.
