Sports
The Gastein Valley, long known as a premiere ski area of the Austrian Alps, is also enjoying success and high attendance through the summer season. With unsurpassed opportunities for on and off-piste ski and snowboarding, cross-country skiing, ice climbing and ski-touring in winter, and hiking, climbing, rafting, canyoning, mountain biking, paragliding, golf, llama trekking and countless other activities in summer, the Gastein Valley has something for everyone.
The winter sport region of Gastein is one of the biggest and most beautiful skiing areas in the province of Salzburg. Because of the altitude, the snow and run conditions for skiers and boarders are excellent from mid December to the spring. This is pure skiing fun: state-of-the-art cable cars and lifts, a total of more than 200 kilometres skilfully prepared runs - you have to experience it to believe it!
Thanks to the Skiamadè alliance in the Salzburg region, your regular ticket is accepted in 25 resorts. That's more than 860kms of marked trail and 270 lifts going up to 2700 meters (8910 feet). It would take a few years to really get to know all that your day pass offers you unlimited access to!
Spring and summer unfold to reveal the region in all its verdant, splendid glory, whether it's long peaceful walks along babbling brooks or launching gracefully off the side of a mountain under the colourful canopy of a paraglider, you can find it here. For the serious hiker, a vast array of peaks stretch as far as the eye can see, the splendid vistas and dizzying heights of the Hohe Tauern Wilderness Reserve ( Central Europe's largest) are easily accessible. See, or climb - if you dare - the Grossglockner, at 3798 meters, Austria's tallest mountain. Recreational hikers can choose from hundreds of kilometres of marked and maintained trails tailored to suit any level. Spend an afternoon relaxing next to a pristine alpine lake with no-one around, or stop by one the region's world-renowned H&uulm;tte (mountain huts) and enjoy some of the rightly famous Austrian Gemütlichkeit (cosy hospitality) and make a few friends.
Adrenaline seekers can choose from traditional thrill sports or new extreme activities. Many local guides and companies offer you the opportunity to climb or jump off mountains, run the countless white water rivers or fly with the eagles.
Young or old, laid-back or extreme, the perfect way to end a day's adventure is with a soak in the famous hot-springs, famous for their curative and rejuvenating properties. State of art bath and recreation complexes feature saunas, waterslides, family fun pools, steam baths and massages- everything for the body and soul.
General
The Gastein valley starts with the town of Dorfgastein, the flat fertile valley floor, flanked on both sides by mountains and tributary valleys, climbs southward through the gorgeous canyons and waterfalls of Bad Gastein before ending abruptly, and dramatically, against the stunning north faces of the Austrian Alps. All along the valley, a glance in any direction reveals postcard views, sturdy, ornate chalets perched atop mountain meadows awash in the myriad colours of spring flowers against a backdrop of snow covered granite peaks.
From here two smaller valleys open up left and right. The right valley climbs steeply to the area of Sportgastein, a characteristically high alpine bowl created by some of the Hohe Tauern Park's most impressive peaks. Down the left valley, a tunnel, serviced by car train, takes you on a ten minute ride directly through and under the mountains, exiting on the south flank of the Alps in beautiful Carinthia, Salzburg's neighbouring province.
The Hohe Tauern National Park, Central Europe's largest and one of Europe's most recently formed wildlife Reserves is easily accessible from here. Areas such as Angertal and Schlosssalm, to name but a few, offer access to vast tracts of unspoiled splendour above and below the treeline. Large tracts of thick older growth forests offer refuge to an abundance of rare wildlife and vegetation.
The Grossglocknerstrasse, considered a classic amongst European mountain highways, takes drivers and riders alike along its serpentine climb up to the 2600 meter Edelweiss Spitz (peak). This is one of the highest highways of Europe and even the world. Stop for pictures and a coffee in the rarefied air of the top lookout station. Mountain peaks as far distant as Slovenia, Italy and even Croatia are visible to the naked eye.
Taking a detour along the glacier panorama road takes one above the Grossglockner glacier with the majestic 3798 meter Grossglockner peak towering above. The lookouts provide great opportunities to see marmots and mountain goats in their natural habitats.
