Splurging for a Greater Good
Inner Beauty
You've heard the hype about letting beauty shine through from the inside and looks being skin deep, so here's the science to back it up. The excessive festive consumption of alcohol and fatty foods presents your body with a challenge. Not only does it have to nourish and maintain organs like your skin, heart, lungs and brain, but it also has to filter out all the crap you force into it. Your liver and digestive system can only do so much – so when there's excess rubbish, your skin becomes a over spill, dumping ground.
The natural process of shedding dead skin cells will take care of these toxins in due course, but you can take action to speed up the regeneration of your appearance. We'll cover the products for this in the next step, but the simple answer to putting a plug in this white head, dumping scheme is water. Drink eight pints of H20 a day and your body will take care of the rest. At a premium level of hydration your body performs its natural de-tox best and expels the maximum amount of party hard excess.
Grease is the Word
Here's what you do when you're suitably re-hydrated and staring at your spot riddled reflection in the mirror. Buy a mild exfoliant and build it into your weekly beauty routine. These products need not cost the world and anything containing witch-hazel, ground up nut-shells and an astringent will help no end. Removing the top layer of skin and the accompanying toxic dumping ground is a great start but it's also the equivalent of lining up a fresh fly strip next to a swamp - when it comes to inviting new spots to the party.
This is why it's important to keep grease levels down to a minimum on this fresh dermal canvas. You can do that with anti-grease wipes from Boots and Superdrug in the UK. The little books cost less than a pound and the mattifying effects help to keep fresh skin, looking fresh.
Splurging for a Greater Good
If things still aren't looking up and you happen to have a bit of spare Christmas cash laying around, then it's definitely worth investing in a tried and tested boutique product or two. For a substantial splurge I'd recommend the Multi-Active Toner from Dermalogica. This completes that all important step between cleansing and moisturising, and it also comes in a nifty spray on bottle.
The propelled ingredients include Lavender and Mint so it also helps to calm any aggravation caused by recent exfoliation. The next logical and complimentary step is of course the same brand's moisturiser but be careful how much you use. Re-hydrating your skin from the outside as well as the inside is important, but your epidermis can only absorb so much before the excess starts to clump together and cause fresh spotty trauma.
