Great Skin On The Road

Last month I promised to demonstrate how to perform a D.I.Y facial at home (or in your hostel), for you and a buddy on the cheap. This month I keep my promise. Here's how to get great skin on the road, without spending your life savings.

A Partner in Crime

It is possible to perform this skin transformation on your own but it's much more fun and far less messy if you buddy up with someone. Also you can split the cost of this already cheap make over between the two of you, making it even more affordable and leaving precious pennies left over for a nice bottle of wine! The latter won't help the quality of you skin but it will add to the fun factor.

Fragrance Free Soap

The obvious place to start is with a good old cleanse and despite what the experts might preach, no frills soap like Dove bars are the most effective, the least irritating and the most inexpensive options out there. Jennifer Aniston swears by simple soap as part of her daily maintenance regime and so do I. A shocking number of people make their skin worse by using perfumed cleansers which irritate the skin and cause swelling, and pore clogging. Why put your skin through it when you can pick up a fragrance free bar from most drug stores - for less than a Euro?

Steaming Those Pores

I would never advocate opening up your pores by sticking your head over a boiling kettle but the hotter and wetter your skin is before an exfoliation, the better. For this stage you will require a bowl, some hot water and a towel. The hotter the water - the better. Simply sit down, place your face over the bowl, drape the towel over your head and allow the steam and heat to infiltrate your pores for at least five minutes. Now your pores, clogged or not, are opened up and ready for a good, revitalising scrubbing.

Oatmeal Exfoliation

It might sound like a bowl of porridge gone wrong but trust me Oatmeal is the best, the most natural and most cost effective exfoliant around. For this process you will need half a cup of hot water, half a cup of oatmeal and a quarter cup of honey. Mix the water and oatmeal together cooking it on a hob, or in a microwave, like you'd do with normal porridge. Next up when it's cooked and cooled for about five minutes, mix in the honey and stir it up into a paste. Now ask your lovely assistant to slowly rub it on your face, in small circles with their finger tips. This will remove all the dead skin cells and pollution on your skin, and when you leave the mask on, the oatmeal will absorb any excess oil. This will reduce the chance of break outs and add a nice healthy glow to your face. If you don't have time for this 15 minute mask, then just skip the honey, cook the porridge and water for three minutes and scrub vigorously, when the mixture has cooled. Think of this as an espresso exfoliation.

A Moisturised Finish

If you want to banish bad skin, keep or induce youthful looks, combat dry skin caused by air travel or do all of the above, then moisturise! This is SO important when it comes to maintaining the elasticity of the skin, which in turn keeps wrinkles at bay and heavy, under-eye bags in their place. Before you add your post oatmeal moisturiser, make sure you splash your face with cold water, or apply any toner that you happen to have with you. Remember the pores are still wide open after exfoliation and all moisturisers contain a degree of oil (the good kind) so you don't want things to clog up straight away! This would after all defeat all your hard work so close those pores with cold water. I recommend a moisturiser called E45. A big tub will cost less than 4 and it goes a long way.
