The Baseline
If you think that you can substitute your daily morning moisturiser with your sun tan lotion, just before the beach – you’re wrong. Sun protectors are always going to oily – there’s no way around it because herein the protection lies. You can however condition your skin to absorb more of said good oil, by preparing your skin appropriately. When it comes to the face in particular this means a mattifying moisturiser after your cleansing and toning session. Your skin eats this stuff up and leaves it ready for more. Therefore applying your sun screen straight after this, guarantees a better absorption rate and less residual. A top product for this is Dermalogica’s Oil Control Lotion which comes complete with microsponges, which absorb the oil on the skin’s surface. The bark extracts in the mix then work to control your oil glands, preventing excess production. After application consider your skin ready for sun screen!
The Mess at the End of the Day
After a day in the sun your skin is, without question, going to be damaged so applying After-Sun and a little renewal time is a necessity – not an option. Before this however you have to cleanse all the crap that’s bonded to your skin during the intense heat and oil exposure. Step up Precleanse from Dermalogica – an all year round product which is also especially useful in the summer sun. The promo says it best so who am I to better it? I hereby quote: “This plant-based cleansing oil, fortified with Olive and Kukui Nut oils, thoroughly melts layers of excess sebum (oil), SUNSCREEN, waterproof makeup, environmental pollutants and residual skin products that build-up during the day.” It’s using oil to get rid of oil. You gotta love that.
Renewal Time
Now that your sun drenched skin has been stripped back to its naked beauty, it’s time to address the damage done by the desire to turn golden and the subsequent exposure to all that radiation. Again I’m going to hit you with the Dermalogica because it’s the best stuff out there when it comes to investing in your body’s largest organ – your skin. The appropriately titled Skin Renewal Booster is designed for skin that’s dry or prematurely aged. The sun dries out and prematurely ages your skin so – bingo! Now the Hyrdoxy and Lactic acids in this badger might mean that you get a little sting after application but this is a good sign and will fade quickly – especially when you follow it up with a luscious moisturiser like the old time classic and ever fashionable, E45. This works everywhere and is just thick enough to do all the good work you need, without adding all that carefully removed oil, back to your supple skin. Sorted. Happy sun bathing!
