Summer Skin

sun cream

It's that time of year again when the sun is strong and the urge to bare your skin to it, is stronger. A sun tan may look good but we all know that exposure to this strong source of radiation causes pre-mature aging, burns and of course skin cancer. If you insist on going out in this, Beauty Terrorist insists on giving you the best protection. Here's the lowdown.

P20

Just because this sun cream is advertised in Conde Naste Traveller - doesn't mean it's out of your league, or not worth investing in. It's not the cheapest option and you'll probably never see it on buy one get one free, but P20 does actually work out to be more economical in the long run. The beauty of this budget friendly application lies in the simplicity. You apply it just once a day, in the morning - fifteen minutes before you expose yourself to the sun. You don't need to reapply for the rest of the day, it's 90 percent water resistant and despite having a SPF of 20, it lets in just the right amount of UVA rays - so that you can tan. The super nasty UVB rays are blocked completely.

Here's an application tip. When you've cleansed and toned in the morning, apply P20 instead of your regular moisturiser. If you use your normal moisturiser before the P20, this actually stops the sun block bonding with the Keratin in your skin. You can pick up this streak free, non greasy product from most Duty Free shops in airports across the planet.

Streak Free Spray Ons

If you're not sold on P20 - don't worry. There are plenty of products that are also streak free, non greasy and easy to apply - with some super spray on nozzles. You do have to keep reapplying but that's not really an issue when it comes to protecting your body's largest organ.

A tried and tested product that delivers great results (even when you're sailing and exposed to a whole load of light reflection) is Garnier Ambre Solaire. The transparent, spray on, factor 20 works a treat, it smells great and it's on promotion this summer so you can buy two big bottles for about £12 (15 or $24).

A Word To The Wise

At the end of the day a sun tan is the body's desperate, last ditch effort to protect itself from the sun. The best protection against harmful rays cannot be bought. It is in fact free. Free will - when you choose not to sun bathe, not to encourage early wrinkles and not to increase your chance of developing skin cancer by exposing yourself to radiation, which causes uncontrollable cell growth.

In the UK in 2006, 1852 in every 100,000 people died from skin cancer. Not all cases were linked to sun exposure but then why take the risk?
