Traveller's Feedback

Last month we launched our first instalment of Travel Tips especially for Women. The response was huge. Women from all over sent in their own tips, tricks and tales of their own solo-adventures. This month we’ve decided to let your fellow backpackers speak for themselves. And we’ll be back next month with more Women-only Resources for you.

I travelled all over Europe for about 3 weeks this past January. I was looking for safety first when it came to picking a location where to stay. To be more economical I would share a room but only if I had a place to lock my belongings.

My tips for women

  1. Never leave your drink unattended, as always
  2. Don't carry a wallet, wear a money belt--and when sharing a room bring Ziploc bags so u can take your stuff with you in the shower too.
  3. If you have a bad feeling about a person in your room or anyone in general, trust your instincts!!

Hope this was helpful

I’m heading travelling for a month by myself in September having been travelling solo once before I’m aware of how emotional it is! Especially in the countries with a foreign language. When I stay at a hostel, I’ll be looking for staff who are friendly and helpful, great party atmosphere with a common room that creates a friendly chatty environment and hopefully the chance to hook up with some people for a night out, if the hostel organised pub drinks or such events that would definitely be a selling point to me.

I am a female, aged 50 who stayed in Bath and York at your hostels a couple of years back. I liked them so much I would do it again. I love the idea of a party hostel. I was not looking for quiet but rather someone to talk to as when you travel by yourself it is kind of lonely. A bar would be great. I am not sure if the younger members would welcome someone of my age though. I do want security though and cleanliness is important.

I am currently in Europe and this is my second time travelling here by myself. I fully encourage my girlfriends to travel alone, which is why I wanted to tell you a little bit about my favourite hostels. I have stayed in a number of different kinds of hostels and in my opinion the ones with a good lounge or bar are the best because I meet people there that I can party with or travel with. I have made more friends in the hostels than anywhere else when I travel. The other thing that is important to me is that it is in a busy part of town because I don't think it is safe to be out by yourself in a foreign city late at night where no one

I've travelled around several countries in Europe as a solo traveller and when I did so I looked for the following things in a hostel:

  1. Good location. I looked for places near train stations, metro/tube/subway stations and popular attractions.
  2. Price. I needed to find a place for a decent price without paying an arm and a leg.
  3. Bars/Pubs. I found SEVERAL hostels with bars/pubs in the actual hostel.

Since I travel alone I like to meet as many people as possible and finding them at the closest watering hole was the best idea. I met some of the most interesting people without having to leave the hostel.

I really enjoyed all of the places I stayed and can't wait to get back to Europe and do it all over again.

Have your say here. Do you have a story to tell; is there something you think all solo-female backpackers should know; is there a resource you only wish was out there already? Let us know. Write: submissions@st-christophers.co.uk
