Part 43 - Staying in Shape on Your Travels
1. Many travellers say it’s hard to find the motivation to stay in shape on the road. What are your top tips for combating work out melancholy?

It’s easy to lose your motivation or forget what you look like when you are away travelling but use the mirror to keep an eye on any change in your body shape, and act accordingly! Instead of walking to the local shop, try jogging. Make the most of the early morning sunrise by going for a jog first thing in the morning or when the sun is setting. You don’t want to be unrecognisable when you return home.
2. What’s the most beneficial type of exercise you can do ‐ if you don’t have regular access to a gym?
Running is one of the most beneficial exercises you can do. As one of the best cardiovascular exercises around it means you reach your aerobic burning zone without killing yourself. Aim to run at 60 ‐ 80% of your maximum heart rate and if possible, do it as many as 2 to 4 times a week. Additionally you could find a curb and do some step ups!
3. As far as fad diets go - what exactly does the no carbs Atkins diet do to your body?
By starving the body of carbs you are essentially taking away its energy source. This means that all your body is doing is eating into your protein levels. This can result in muscle wastage as your body starts to eat into your muscles. Cutting carbs long term can also give you really bad breath! Also once you start eating carbs again you can expect weight gain as your body, not knowing when it is going to get its next fix, will store it.
4. Physiologically, how does too much alcohol interfere with a healthy lifestyle?
Alcohol is really not good for a healthy lifestyle on many levels. It is not good for your weight as it is full of calories (depending what you are drinking this can be roughly 200 calories for a pint of beer or glass of wine). To burn off this amount of calories you would have to run on the treadmill for 20 minutes and that’s just for one drink. The high sugar content is also bad for you as excessive consumption can lead to blocked arteries which can then result in heart disease.
5. If you can only do one exercise a day to be healthier, what would you recommend?
Running again. If you’re stuck in one place try using the stairs or the fire exit to do at least 20 minutes up and down.
6. Finally - is Peanut Butter really a super food?
No!
