Interview Time - Rob Savage meets Bailey Tzuke
Bailey Tzuke is tipped as the next big thing on the international music circuit and she’s already got a fair few accolades to her name. American Billboard Editor DJ Larry Flick has championed her music, Kylie Minogue has tweeted her support for Bailey’s sound, the Freemasons produced global hit Uninvited with Bailey’s vocals on point and her track, Turn and Turn Again, shot to fame after it was featured in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Bailey has just released her first independent single ‐ Strong and is in the midst of recording her debut solo album. She was however kind enough to take some time out to talk to you guys. Here’s what happened …
Just to warm up, in the last Interview Time installment I asked Simon Reeve to sell himself in a desperately seeking section, using 25 words or less. How would you humorously sum yourself up if I asked you to do the same?
Bubbly, passionate, athletic, vertically challenged, blonde with musical aspirations seeks a good listener, who is emotionally intelligent and has a GSOH.
Your new single Strong is oh‐so‐catchy and with lyrics like ‐ I know your heart like the back of my hand ‐ there seems to be a story behind it. Is there?
Strong was written about finding a place in a relationship where you can overcome the things that can so easily tear love apart if you let them ‐ things like jealousy and paranoia, which we can all carry from one relationship to the next. It’s about communicating and not letting your past ruin your future.
When you were growing up, who was it that made you get up and dance on the sofa like crazy when their music came on the radio?
Wow! There were so many but when I was small (smaller!) I remember being obsessed with Shakespeare’s Sister’s Stay! I would pretend that I was in the video and which character I played depended on my mood. Instead of the sofa I preferred to dance and sing on the kitchen table under a huge, beaded lampshade. I would perform to anyone who was interested or unlucky enough to cross my path.
If you could spend a day in the life of somebody else, who would you pick and why?
Stephen Fry! Being terribly dyslexic and having a hard time retaining information I am intrigued to know what it would feel like to be so intellectual, so well informed and hilarious. Watching QI makes me feel like I am getting smarter even though in reality it’s going straight in one ear and out the other. I can barely remember what I had for breakfast and don’t get me started on how long it takes me to read a book.
What kind of flavours are going into the recipe for your debut album and can we expect more stompers like Strong?
There will definitely be more stompers (I love that word!) but I also love the simplicity of just performing with a piano ‐ so some far more delicate tracks will feature. At this stage we are cooking up a feast of pounding drums, music box piano, soaring synths and me, and at the moment it is all tasting good!
You’re currently rehearsing for a series of upcoming shows. Where and when are they going to be and which one are you the most excited about?
We have just done our first two London shows, which have been amazing. The band is sounding excellent and it feels great to be playing live again. The reaction to my new material has been so exciting and I think that the best feed back you can get as an artist is directly from the audience. The next two shows are June 3rd at The Bedford in Balham and June 11th at the Troubadour in Earls Court. We are just about to announce some new dates for the summer which, once confirmed, will be listed on my website. So it’s a bit of a cop‐out but I’m really excited about all of them!
Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met and did you manage to keep your cool when you encountered them ‐ or did you start uttering high pitch, unrecognizable vowel sounds before laughing uncontrollably?
When I was nine weeks old I was taken to one of Freddie Mercury’s famous Ibiza Birthday parties! I wish that I could say that I remember it but I am going to guess I made a mixture of high pitch unrecognizable vowel sounds, a lot cooing and a fiar amount of gurgling.
If you could change one thing in this world for the better using nothing but your music, what would it be and why?
I find it sad that in such a busy world where we have the technology to communicate with such ease, some people can still become so isolated and find it hard to reconnect. I think that loneliness must be one of the hardest things to endure so if my music could comfort and help to bring those on the outside back in, it would make me really happy.
You get the chance to duet with anyone in the world, dead or alive and the recording has to be a cover. Who’s the lucky musical counterpart and what’s the song?
That’s easy! Tom Waits. What would we sing? Whatever he liked!
And finally for a bit of fun, let’s play snog, marry, avoid. Stevie Wonder, Simon Cowell and George Osborne. Go!
Snog ‐ Simon Cowell. Marry ‐ Stevie Wonder. Avoid ‐ George Osbourne. To be honest I would snog or marry Stevie. He is so talented and seems like such a gentlemen ‐ I find musicality hugely endearing. I wouldn’t be averse to avoiding both Simon and George but it’s better the devil you know and I don’t really have a grasp of George’s policies. Actually I’m not sure I know where Simon is coming from either!
