Rob Savage talks to Amy Adams

Amy Adams - Travel Editor of TNT Magazine

This month I got chatting with Amy Adams ‐ the Travel Editor of London’s biggest magazine, TNT. From Katie Price to the latest travel accessories, we’ve got it covered so go right ahead and enjoy the read.

So you’re given the supernatural ability to delete either Peter Andre or Katie Price from human history. Who goes bye bye and why?

It’s got to be Jordan. The tan, the trout pout, the increasingly demonic look in her eyes. It’s all becoming a bit unsettling.

How did you get involved with TNT and what’s the ride been like so far?

I sneaked in the back door as listings editor and after a stint as staff writer became travel editor. As one of the few Brits in an office of Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans it’s been quite an education. On my first day a colleague told me I could wear thongs to work. Luckily I didn’t take this at face value.

What’s the best part of your job?

I’d be lying, and possibly in the wrong job, if I didn’t say the travelling. From ice fishing in the depths of Russia to trekking in Northern Pakistan, my work has taken me to some amazing places. The rewards aren’t all outside the office, though. Getting a letter from a reader saying they’ve been inspired to travel somewhere after reading TNT makes my day.

And the worst?

Everyday I come across a new destination I want to go to. My wish list is getting way too long.

What five books would you willing drag across the planet in your backpack?

  • Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson ‐ guaranteed to make you feel good, even on a Monday morning.
  • The Magus by John Fowles ‐ a gripping, Greek Island adventure.
  • A Fine balance by Rohinton Mistry ‐ a heartbreaking epic set in India.
  • The Book Thief by Markus Zusak ‐ no book has made me cry more and I still love it.
  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte ‐ a classic with the best heroine ever.

Would you rather French kiss Prince Charles or lock lips with Gordon Brown (there’s no opting out)?

In tribute to Gavin and Stacey I’d have to say Price Charles ‐ Gavin’s Mum has a crush on him and makes his Dad wear stick on ears in bed…

What in your expert opinion would be the best New Year destination for a traveller on a budget?

Jump on a train to Liverpool. The beer’s cheap, there’s loads to do and see and no one knows how to party like the Scousers. Take a brisk walk along Crosby beach on New Year’s Day and see Antony Gormley’s haunting sculptures.

You head up the Get Packing column in TNT, recommending the best weekly purchases for the discerning Indie traveller. What’s your hot tip for a Christmas gift this year?

GSI Outdoors has launched as Personal Java Press which is basically a portable cafetiere. It’s going to be perfect for my Dad who likes to head off into the hills but loves a decent coffee too.

If your life were made into a movie, which celeb would you cast to play you?

Amy Adams of course!

The newspaper and magazine publishing business is a bit of a recession battered mess at the minute. Do you think there’s any light at the end of the tunnel for titles like the Evening Standard?

I think there’s definitely still a place for free sheets as long as they’re dynamic, in tune with their core readership and prepared to move with the times, like Shortlist and, excuse the shameless promotion, TNT. If Evening Standard are going to survive I think they’ll have to shake things up a bit. Going free was a bold move but they’ll need to back it up with some equally bold changes.

And finally Marmite ‐ yay or nay?

Very much yay.
