Beautiful Bruges in Belgium - "Venice of the North"
St. Christopher's Inns teamed up at the Bauhaus Hostel and Budget Hotel in the town of Bruges - one of Europe's best-preserved medieval cities in the heart of historic Flanders, right in between Paris and Amsterdam. There are many reasons to visit this town for a couple of days, and keep coming back as most people do!
Belgium's is renown gastronomic delicacies (waffles, chocolate) are all around to be savoured and cherished, but best of all though, are the world famous Belgian Beers. Local savours these amazing and diverse beers in the same way that others savour the best wines.
Beautiful, sweet nectar of the Gods
St. Christopher's @ the Bauhaus is your best starting point for a journey into the wonders of Belgium's liquid gold. The range of Belgian beers stretch far beyond the strong ales of the Trappists (Abbey brews). Among the other fascinating brews the country boasts are complex spiced ales, wood-aged brown ales, soured red ales, oaky-Grand Cru's; and beers flavoured with cherries, raspberries and other fruits. If that’s not enough, they also have orange-and coriander-spiced white beers and Lambics (Gueuze) - the world's only commercially available beer style relying on spontaneous fermentation by wild yeasts. According to the legend, in the Middle Ages, the Brugeans survived The Plague by consuming only beer! Can’t argue with that now can we!
Ok, so it's more than just beer
Bruges isn’t just about great beer though. It is truly one of the most beautiful cities you can ever visit. Apart from the picturesque canals (Bruges is often referred to as the “Venice of the North”), there are loads of other things to do and see.
Bruges stretches all the way to the coast, so a 15 minunte ride from the Bauhaus brings you to one of Europe's widest sandy beaches - worth a visit in all seasons.
You can also hire a car or bike and go for a trip along the Napoleonic Canal, through historic Damme. Keep on trucking and you will soon find yourself in the Dutch border town of Sluis amongst windmills, Dutch maidens and cheeses.
Visit to the nearby town of Leper (don’t let the name put you off), and you will find yourself at the epicentre of the 2 Great World Wars. There are a few good museums here, as well as preserved trenches and vast war cemeteries.
A visit to the other historic sister cities Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels are also filled day trips from your Brugean home base out.
