Surviving in Prague in the Czech Republic
Ever wanted to visit Prague, in Czech Republic? Well, have a look at those tips before you pack, and enjoy the best Gateway to Eastern Europe!
Prague remains one of the favourite destinations for backpackers. With its cobblestone roads and Baroque-style Churches, the first thought that might come to mind is "this city is absolutely beautiful". Aside from its beauty, Prague is also known for it's cheap beer, women (Cheap? Does this include the women? Ed.) and a lively nightlife that can guaranteed that you will have a good time. This is a undoubtedly an excellent place to visit and party, but like most cities, there is a gritty, dark side that can empty your pockets and leave you feeling as worn out as a hooker at sunrise.
I lived in Prague for six months when I was working in a hostel and have experienced some of these cons first-hand. Here are few tips I used to tell my hostel guests when they just arrive.
Like any city, tourists going to Prague should be aware of scams targeted specifically at tourists and backpackers. The scams are aimed mostly at English speakers, as Czechs believe they have a lot of money. Although these smooth-talking, greasy-fingered scammers target mostly men, women should not think they are off the hook - any tourist is considered fair game.
- Arriving in Prague. When first arriving in to Prague, if someone says they came to pick you up from your hostel or they have a hostel you can stay at, just say you have a hostel and walk away. No hostels send people to collect you.
- Taxis. Don't take one if you don't have to. When you do take a taxi, make sure they have the meter on or negotiate the price before you leave. If they don't give you a receipt, you don't have to pay. Sweet!
- Guys. When walking in groups, beware of any women coming toward you. They are sometimes prostitutes or pickpockets trying to steal your belongings. If they begin grabbing you, don't get excited and think it is your lucky day. Start checking your pockets - These women are quick and can steal in a second.
- Transport. Always, always get a tram or metro ticket and validate it. If you don't you will be fined 900 Czech Krones. This doesn't seem like a lot of money, but normally you pay between 12 and15 KC. These Czech's don't play around - if caught, you have to pay on the spot or the police will throw your sorry behind in the jail.
- Coppers. As strange as this sounds, never give the police anything. If they ask you for a wallet or passport, you can say no and tell them that you will show them at the nearest station. This will usually scare way any con artist.
- Money. Always count your change when purchasing an item. Granted, not everyone in the city will try and rip you off, but there are a few that will - They figure you have a plenty of money and won't miss a few hundred Krones.
