Ethical Travel : Charity On The Open Road
Moving Slowly - Charity on the Open Road
April sees the St Christopher’s crew embrace a cause that, as far as this feature is concerned: “Does exactly what it says on the tin.”
Moving Slowly is an organisation run by two remarkable individuals called Massimo and Fabio. The philosophy behind it involves an evolution, away from traveling for the thrill of travelling and towards travelling for the benefit of the people you meet along the way.
Best of all Moving Slowly does it with a faithful Citroen Mehari, a car chosen for its strange ability to draw people towards it, thus breaking the ice.
The History Of It
Fabio and Massimo have so far taken their faithful Mehari across part of Europe and Africa. The car was shipped from Italy to Tunis where the pair drove it to Libya, before heading onto Cairo.
The path of the Nile lead them onto the Sudanese border and from here the pair went onto Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
The trip ended in South Africa where the guys took some time out to relax after a lot of charity work along the way.
What They Did On The Road
Massimo and Fabio spent 15 years travelling the world but at the end of the day they found that there was something missing. The people they met weren’t the true representatives of where they were and more often than not they were drawn into the ready made world of tourism.
The two firmly believe that this cotton wool wrapped experience only serves to strengthen the social barriers between cultures which in turn create a trail of negative impressions.
The pair help out wherever they can and deliver aid in the most practical and effective ways. This can involve anything from delivering medicines and parts for well pumps or simply lending a pair of helping hands.
Where To Next
The car will start its next journey in Argentina before heading on to charity projects in Chile.
Brazil will be next, followed by Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and then Los Angeles where the faithful Mehari will be packed up and shipped to Singapore.
From Singapore the team will embark on their biggest trip yet, crossing practically every country in Eurasia.
