Top 10 Travel Photos
Every month we run a photography competition for our backpackers! The traveller who sends in the best snap wins two nights of free accommodation, for them and a friend ‐ at any St Christopher’s hostel across Europe! Here are the top ten wining shots from the past ten months and the details about how you can get involved too!
- Marko Pekic, July 2009 Winner
This photo was taken in front of the famous Eilean Donan Castle in Scotland. Here is very young, but skilled bagpipe musician. He and his brother did a short performance here and earned some money from the visitors.
- Magdalena Banuelos, June 2009 Winner
While in Mumbai a young girl came up to my friend and I, and asked us to buy her an ice cream cone from a local McDonalds. Since she was not begging for money like all the other children, we gladly made the purchase. When her grandmother saw us buying the ice cream cone for her she also wanted one … the ten cents we spent on ice cream was well worth the smiles on their faces.
- Matthew Nicholls, May 2009 Winner
The first photo was taken after a night out on the town. I came to Paris alone knowing nobody -but after a bit of liquid courage I went out on the town, made a few friends and had the time of my life. This photo was taken at around five in the morning, when I arrived back at my room. The entire day it was windy and rainy, but at this moment there was no rain nor wind, it was perfect!
- Laura Osborne, April 2009 Winner
I've always loved Brighton and since discovering St Christopher's there last year, I've been down no less than three times! I love photography and I find Brighton is an ideallic location for a wide variety of subjects. The photos I've chosen seem to sum up Brighton - this one is my friend in the setting sun, standing in the sea, eclipsed by the mammoth structure that is the West Pier.
- Diosdado Iranon, March 2009 Winner
Nothing beats the hot blazing sun of the tropics better than the clear and cool water - also in the tropics. This is exactly what I was thinking as I took this picture of my friends in El Nido, in the Philippines. When the sun sets here - the fishing boats drifting in the different hues of blues and yellows is a sight to behold. It's a tropical paradise.
- Ariel Body, February 2009 Winner
I absolutely fell in love with the city of Edinburgh - the tiers, the stairs, the closes -all of it. I love how you can take some random alley and end up somewhere completely different, with an equally beautiful and serene view. It's almost like some sort of fairytale land.
- Siddhartha Butalia, January 2009 Winner
London is cold but I like where I’m living ‐ the music from Belushi’s below settles like a warm blanket shrouding the fog outside. We step out, over the cobbled stone path, a short ride in the Underground and then meander through a trail of postcard pictures ‐ the lone swan sheltering under its wing as the sun sets over Hyde Park, the purple haze reflection of the London Eye on the Thames and finally turn in as Big Ben chimes the closing of the Underground.
- Marc Whitehouse, December 2008 Winner
This photo was taken while I was unaware, but captures my inner thoughts of leaping into the colossal canyon, just to see if I could defy the local warnings that it takes at least 6 hours to reach the bottom!
- Sean Williams, November 2008 Winner
It was a marvellous day, the sun was shining and my friends and I were enjoying a stroll through the cobbled streets, taking in the history, and the beauty of Bruges.
- Chuan Lian Koh, October 2008 Winner
This picture was taken during my roadtrip to Reno and Lassen Voclanic National Park, California in August, 2008. It depicts the splendour of colours, one man made and the other natural. I was totally taken in and overwhelmed by the sights.
