Top 10 Travel Songs

Seasoned travellers will be well aware that every location you visit requires a fitting musical accompaniment. Associating good times with good tunes means that when you return home and become shackled to a ‘nice and normal' office job, you can replay your travel soundtrack and escape the nine to five grind. Well escape it for long as the battery on your iPod last for that is. Here are my top ten soundtrack suggestions for the places you may well end up in.

  1. Walking In Memphis
Father and son walking A classic from Cher documenting the catfish on the table, the soul of Elvis and a bit of gospel in the air. This is a treat of a tune and a fantastic reminder of better days spent strolling through the streets of Tennessee.
  2. From Paris To Berlin
Train in the platform This cheesy Euro Pop / Dance number covers two of the most popular capitals on the European continent and it's brought to you by the slightly plastic duo – Infernal. Think fake bake tan, bleach blond hair and waxed chests. Terrific.
  3. Barcelona
Sagrada Familia in Barcelona A strong Spanish flavour accompanies this number in which Freddie Mercury realised a life long dream – to sing opposite an opera singer. The lucky lady in this number was Montserrat Caballe who also features heavily on the Pop-Opera album with the same name.
  4. London Calling
London Telephone Box This album and lead song from the Clash was inspired by a nuclear meltdown in Pennsylvania, drug use, racism and unemployment. It's not the cheeriest of songs but it does capture the boomerang effect of the British capital – it just keeps on bringing visitors back - again and again and again . . .
  5. Born In The USA
USA Flag This title track from Mr Bruce Springsteen's seventh album is a bit more widely applicable for good times - had in the states. It's not exclusive to Memphis and with lyrics like: “I'm a cool rocking daddy in the USA” you can't really go wrong.
  6. La Isla Bonita – Madonna
Beautiful Island The word for word translation of this belter from Madonna is – The Beautiful Island, so it's a great memory prompt for good times had on Frasier Island, Cuba, Ireland or even the United Kingdom! The song was originally written for Michael Jackson - to be included on the album Bad, but when he turned it down Madonna stepped in. Phew.
  7. Amsterdam
Windmill in Amsterdam Not surprisingly – this inane Indie Pop dribble sounds just like every other song released by Chris Martin and his band of sell out, Coldplay companions. Alas it was the only one I could find that celebrated the city of sin in song so here it is at number seven. With the right ‘herbal' chaser it might actually sound half decent.
  8. Is This The Way To Amarillo?
Amarillo, Texas Tony Christie is a dude. Who else could take an old school and may I say superbly cheesy song - about a man travelling to Texas in search of his fiancé - and turn it into a multi million selling single for charity – Comic Relief. Legend.
  9. New York New York – Frank Sinatra
Statue of Liberty in New York One of the most Karaoke covered songs in history but also one of Frank's finest offerings. Few know that this badger was originally written for and performed by Lisa Minnelli in the Martin Scorsese flick – New York New York. Nevertheless it's a great song to go with the greatest city in America.
  10. Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Rainbow drawing I'd like to dedicate this one to the eternal daydreamers in the international travelling crowd. This number like its title is deliberately not location specific and inspires future travel, and sessions of reminiscing about the better days behind you – when you were on the road without a care in the world. A three drink minimum is necessary for this variety of soppiness to work.

amsterdam - peter bjorn and john ...much better.

Madonna's "La Isla Bonita" is actually written about Ambergris Caye off the coast of Belize. It's a little $$$ and touristy these days, but you might try some of my other favorite spots: Toledo, Cayo, Caye Caulker, or Placencia. They're all pretty "bonita", but fyi-- the whole country speaks English. Enjoy!
