National Insurance Numbers

What is a National Insurance Number

If you have started or are about to start work then you need to apply for your NI number, this number records your NI contributions (a deduction that comes from your earnings in addition to PAYE) and it is also used when claiming any social security benefits. By law you must have an NI number but once you do you have it for life – it will also help you when you apply for a tax refund if this is applicable.

How to apply for an NI Number

Your first step is to contact the NINO Call Centre by telephone on 0845 6000 643 – you also need to complete an NI application form – if you want one of these then write to sarah@britbound.co.uk and we can send you one also.

You will then attend an interview – remember that you will need to take along supporting information and documentation to prove your identity, right to work and evidence of employment or that you are seeking work. Be sure to take notes when calling for your appointment and remember that once you have your appointment – go to it!!

The appointment will usually be 2-3 weeks after calling and your card will follow a few weeks after that. If you are here on an HSMP or Work Permit then your employer can fast-track this process for you – for more information contact BritBound (www.britbound.co.uk) or e-mail on above address.
