Berlin Events

Events for March 2010

Kristin Kendle

Berlin in March is pretty rainy and pretty chilly ‐ in other words a great time to head indoors and explore the world class museums of Berlin! There are however (as always) some great events going on outside too, so find out what’s on tap for your trip to Berlin in March ‐ right here. We’ve got everything from amusement parks to music festivals, so stay tuned.

Spandau Volksfest ‐ March 11 to 29, 2010

The quintessential free event that’s fun for just about everyone in March is the Volksfest, which means people’s festival. You’ll find the fun at 1 Neuendorfer Strasse in northwest Berlin. Simply take the U‐bahn to Altstadt Spandau to get here. The hours vary each day, but it generally starts sometime in the afternoon and goes on until midnight, every day. Expect a playful amusement park atmosphere complete with roller coasters, water park rides and more. Better yet ‐ it’s free!

MaerzMusik ‐ March 19 to 28, 2010

MaerzMusik is a festival featuring contemporary music of all kinds and it’s a great event to check out if you enjoy music ‐ full stop. Tickets are available at the box office, at Haus der Berliner Festspiele, located at Schaperstraße 24. Venues housing the concerts are located all around town and feature everything from Arabic music to Jazz group exhibitions. Check at the box office for details and a full programme.

Staatsoper Unter den Linden Festival ‐ March 26 to April 5, 2010

Also known as the Festtage, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Festival takes place at the beautiful Berlin Opera House. This event features a series of world renowned operas set against a historic backdrop. Tickets range from an affordable 25 Euros up to several hundred Euros each. This event is hugely popular and tickets sell out very early so book now! Even if you’re not an opera fan, check out the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, located on Under den Linden. There’s a popular thoroughfare running through the Mitte (East Berlin) to the Brandenburg Gate too. The opera building is also open for guided tours at 5 Euros a head. It’s best to check at the opera house itself for tour times.

Miss Prussia and Other Museum Fare ‐ From March 6, 2010

If you are faced with rainy weather during your visit, the museums of Berlin are a great way to get inside while still enjoying the culture of this city. Many museums ‐ including the Altes Museum, Nues Museum and the Pergamon Museums (my favourites) often have special exhibits and events during the rainy season that are well worth checking out. In March one of the best is the Miss Prussia exhibit at the Charlottenburg Palace. It’s open every day except for Tuesday, with complimentary exhibits at Peacock Island and Paretz. This event features more than 200 pieces of artwork and documents, all about the Prussian Queen Luise ‐ a legend in Germany because of her opposition to Napoleon!
