Events for June 2009

Kristin Kendle

With the warmer weather comes many things to do in the ever active city of Berlin. In June, take in everything from a Carnival celebration to some contemporary design and LGBT pride. Here’s Berlin for the month ahead!

Carnival of Cultures

If you’re in Berlin early in the month (around June 1) then head over to what’s left of the Carnival of Cultures. This takes place in the Kreuzberg district and highlights the many cultures that cohabitate and contribute to the metropolis that is Berlin. Echoing other carnival celebrations that take place all over the world, Berlin’s carnival kicks off with a parade on May 31. After that, an array of musical performances on four stages provide excellent entertainment and over 350 booths offer food, merchandise, and more! There’s no admission fee and you can find more details on the carnival website.

Waldbuhne Open Air Concert

Sadly this concert is already sold out. I’m only including it just in case you wish to look into getting tickets independently, because this concert makes for a fantastic and cultural evening out! It’s held on the Waldbuhne stage, on June 21 in a forested area of Berlin and has the feel of a large picnic. If you do get tickets, bring along some snacks or champagne and get ready to enjoy a truly unique set.

Berlin International Design Festival

If you are interested in art or design, this festival is for you. The Berlin International Design Festival focuses on what’s new in contemporary design and gives designers, young and old ‐ a place to express themselves and network. Tickets are less than €20 and the event takes place from June 3 until June 7, in the Arena Berlin.

Christopher Street Day

Often simply called CSD, Christopher Street Day is a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride event that takes place in cities all around Europe. One of the largest celebrations anywhere however ‐ is in Berlin. The event focuses on equal rights for everyone and includes a march through the city. The march is set to start on June 27 at Kurfurstendamm ‐ on the corner of Joachimsthaler Road, from 10.00. The route winds through the city and ends at the Victory Column at around 17.30, with a closing speech at about 18.00 and many a party afterwards!
