Brighton Events

Peter Meehan, Travel Writer

The shortest, darkest day of the year is behind us now and as Spring approaches, Brighton is blooming with blooming fabulous events. Cringe worthy metaphors aside, here’s Peter Meehan with his jam packed list of what’s coming up in February.

Brighton Science Festival ‐ February 7th to February 28, 2010

Throughout the month of February, in many venues across Brighton, the Science festival rolls into town. Including talks, films, workshops and even plays, this festival provides entertainment and education for all ages. You have the chance to learn about many fascinating subjects, including the Hubble telescope, alternative energy, life and the Universe.

Rambert Dance Company at the Theatre Royal Brighton ‐ February 3 to February 6, 2010

Taking the lead from the Science festival and in commemoration of Charles Darwin year, artistic director Mark Baldwin brings 2010’s Comedy of Change tour to Brighton ‐ after universal success with Constant Speed (2005) and Eternal Light (2008). The Rambert orchestra are playing the score ‐ which was specially commissioned by Julian Anderson, a renowned British composer. On top of that Kader Attia‐Ramber ‐ one of Paris’ leading lights in contemporary art, is behind the skilful blend of dance and science, and together this is all set to produce a stunningly energetic, and striking performance.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival ‐ February 11, 2010

In my opinion this is one of the world’s most anticipated mountain festivals and it’s on a world tour with 30 different countries on the bill. Brighton is lucky enough to be one of the stops and if you hit the Komedia Club, you and mountain fans alike are guaranteed some jaw‐dropping and thought‐provoking features…about mountains. Part of the film festival includes international film productions with mountain themes ‐ like mountaineering (obviously), ice and rock climbing, wildlife and environmental issues, and all the mountain sports ‐ so skiing, snowboarding, kayaking and any other way that people like to get down mountains quickly.

Deadly Rhythm presents MJ Cole, Oneman and More at Audio ‐ February 12, 2010

This event (run by a friend of mine ‐ ahem) is Deadly Rhythm’s Brighton launch party. It’s headlined by garage legend and Mercury nominated MJ Cole, who’s been entertaining crowds for well over a decade. Oneman is a Deadly Rhythm regular and he’s staking a claim as one of the most talented DJs in urban music today. For only £6 you can head on down to Audio for these two top acts and more, in what I’m certain will be an enjoyable, and memorable, night of fun.

X Factor at The Brighton Centre ‐ February 27 and 28, 2010

Dominating TV screens across the country, the hugely popular and BAFTA Award winning talent search is taking the show on the road. Featuring the stars of the 2009 series and a bunch of special guests, you can watch on in awe and decide who really deserved to be beaten to the Christmas number one, by a Los Angeles rock band. Get your tickets from the box office (UK 0844 847 1515) and then go home to practice your singing in front of the mirror ‐ ahead of next year’s competition.
