Military Tattoo
Yes the first time I heard this title I was confused too. However this tattoo isn't skin décor – it's a spectacular military performance. Situated in just about the best location possible, the Military Tattoo takes place in front of the Edinburgh Castle and performs nightly, with the exception of Sundays. Since 1950 the military have put on a great show - consisting of musical and marching band numbers, re-enactments, bagpipe jamming and stunts. While this show isn't free, it's still one of the best times to be had in this city. Ticket prices range from €13 to €45.
Edinburgh Fringe Festival
From August 3 through to August 25 - the largest arts festival in the world takes to the streets of Edinburgh. Possibly the worst and the coolest festival ever, the Fringe showcases just about anything and everything. If performers can afford a booth - they can perform at this festival. Daily sheets detail the shows running each day and while there are sure to be some real stinkers on stage, true talent also shines through. Go out, explore and enjoy the crazy variety.
International Book Festival
Bookworms unite! From August 9 to August 25 at Charlotte Square Gardens, one of the largest literary festivals in the world brings out hundreds of writers and readers. Book signings, readings, lectures and more make this an awesome experience for anyone who loves a good story.
The Edge Festival
If all the books and artistic performances have got you down, check out this smaller festival - focusing purely on Rock music. It's held at the Liquid Room from August 1 to 16.
International Festival
This is the more traditionally cultured cousin of the Fringe Festival and features opera, ballet, symphonic performances and more. It gathers some of the finest talent from around the world and is held throughout the city, between August 8 and August 31.
Fireworks Galore
The end of the festival month is marked by Europe's largest firework show. High points around the city offer great views (if you can't get tickets). Just so you know - Princes Street is the centre of the display and its musical accompaniment.
