London Event Guide - Events for July 2009

Welcome to July’s handy and succinct guide to the best bits of London. The British capital has something to please all tastes this summer so come along and get involved.

London Bridge Festival – July 10 to 25, 2009

The London Bridge Festival has been gathering momentum for a while now and this year the Belushi’s bar on Borough High Street is the official comedy venue for it! The bar, attached to St Christopher’s Inns, is also set to host live music and films through out the festival!

Better yet, St Christopher’s Inn is booked as the official poetry and storytelling venue! This thing is so big that they’re closing London Bridge for a weekend and a lot of the big bands around are coming to town so why not give it a go?

Cost: Varies, Nearest Tube Station: London Bridge or Borough High Street

Pride – July 4, 2009

Amsterdam isn’t the only city celebrating gay pride this month and on Saturday July 4, the streets of central London are going to be filled with a rather spectacular spectacle.

This marks the beginning of the London Pride Festival fortnight and the theme this year is: “come out and play”, implying fun and games for all whether you’re gay, straight or in-between! Head to Trafalgar Square between 13.00 and 20.00 and you won’t be able to miss it!

Cost: Free, Nearest Tube Station: Piccadilly Circus

Cloud Dance Festival – July 17 July to July 19, 2009

Head along to Jacksons Lane Theatre at 19.30 on these dates to witness the most exciting contemporary dance around, in this North London gothic church.

The festival also goes by the name - Open Your Eyes and is complimented with film screenings, live music and bizarre props, all on top of the dancing!

Expect 23 dance companies over the three nights, with everything from strutting matadors to bungee jumping ballerinas!

Cost: Varies, Nearest Tube Station: Highgate

Wimbledon – Until July 5, 2009

The world's most well know tennis tournament needs no grand words from me! What I will say however is that the eyes of the world are on top British star Andy Murray who may well be the first Brit to win the title since the 1930s!

With Nadal out of the picture this time around there could well be no stopping Andy. Also it looks like the famous Williams sisters are set to face off in the final so prepare yourselves for an extended spell on the edge of your seats!

Greenwich Beer and Jazz Festival

There’s nothing nicer than a crisp, cold beer in the sun and with a little blues in the background, you’ll be in heaven! At this: “pint sized” summer festival the music kicks off at lunchtime and runs until 22.00 on the lawns of the Old Royal Naval College.

Expect big blues names like Courtney Pine and the James Taylor Quartet to belt out the big tunes, along with a host of rising stars from the spheres of traditional Jazz, Funk and Latin.

Cost: Varies, Nearest Train Station: Greenwich
