Events for September 2008

Kalon Huett

Stunning and historically significant buildings are scattered across London with more abundance than sprinkles on a kid's scoop of ice cream. But whilst you can't miss them, you can't see inside them either. (Unless you're willing to be arrested for breaking and entering a few minutes later, but I don't recommend that).

Open House London Architecture Up Close

Fortunately for law abiding architecture enthusiasts there is another way. It takes place on the weekend of September 20 and 21, 2008 and it's known as Open House London - Architecture Up Close. There will be an amazing 700 building and architectural tours, featuring not just historical gems but modern designs and areas of urban change all in one of the world's greatest cities.

Experts in the design, construction or conservation of many of the attractions will also be on hand to offer their knowledge and insight - which is very handy if you're ever planning to create something more extravagant than a gigantic pyramid of unwashed clothes in your hostel room.

Gritty Details

For more details and for a full program visit the website - openhouse.org.uk. The chances are that if there's a building you wouldn't mind poking your nose in, it will be on the list! It's certainly possible to explore quite a number of them in one day - if you plan your route and don't get lost in the depths of an ancient architectural masterpiece. Personally I can see myself indulging those rock star fantasies at 23 Brook Street - the flat of Jimi Hendrix - but I may even go along to somewhere with a little more cultural importance.

The Best For Free

Some buildings and activities require a booking, but all of them are completely free. A tight budget can't stop you from spending at least one day of your life strutting around theatres, palaces and mansions - that very few people have the privilege to see ever! Sadly though, sleepovers are not part of the programme.
