Come and celebrate the most magical time of the year in one of the most picturesque winter wonderlands in England. As the thriving centre of Cornwall, Newquay offers some wonderful holiday day trips - away from the crowds, where you can find that special gift.

Fowey Christmas Market - December 6, 2008

Starting at 10am this annual Christmas Market allows many shoppers to find the perfect present for that special someone. With over 80 traders selling local food, drinks and crafts, it shouldn’t be hard to find the perfect gift. Located in three heated marquees on the Quayside in Fowey, you should make sure your wallet and singing voices are both ready, as carol singers serenade and involve the punters. A special visit from Chris Kringle himself in also on the cards!

Trelissick Christmas Market - December 13 to 14, 2008

Similar to the Fowey market, the Trelissick Market opens its doors at 10am for shoppers to experience a truly traditional, Cornish market. You’ll find it at the heart of Truro at the lovely Trelissick Gardens.

Free Christmas Market - December 15, 2008

Located right on Bank Street in Newquay - just minutes from the hostel, this market will host not only local traders but also Father Christmas, who will be paying a special visit just for the kids. Come along and enjoy the live bands, the Morris Dancers and just a wee bit of Christmas joy!

Newquay Christmas Festival - December 21 to 23, 2008

Everyday starting at 11am, local musicians fill the air with the sweet sounds of the holidays. Throughout Fore Street, marquees will be set up with local tradesman, craft stalls and cooking demonstrations for everyone looking for some last minute inspiration. For the festive alcohol fans in town, there will be over 45 different ales available - including the highly anticipated 2008 Christmas editions.

Tom Bawcock’s Eve - December 23, 2008

Tom Bawcock is a historical figure steeped in legend. He was a fisherman from Mousehole in Cornwall, who in order to save his village from famine, ventured out into a terrible storm. When he arrived back safely he made a huge pie from his catch and called it - Stargazy Pie. Every year the residents of Mousehole commemorate his brave efforts by holding a festival in his honour, including of course several servings of the traditional Stargazy Pie and also, folk music written in his honour.

New Year’s Eve Carnival in Newquay - December 31, 2008

Known throughout Cornwall as the heart of fancy dress for New Year’s Eve, Newquay comes alive with hundreds of party goers from around the world. There really is no better place to be when they ring in the New Year!

PS. News just in. The nearby town of Torbay is splashing out £30,000 of tax payers’ money to buy pink and purple, unisex flip flops for people who are: “too drunk” to make it home in: “dangerous footwear.” I had no idea high heels and loafers were so dangerous but if you fancy a free pair of flip flops, courtesy of the British Home Office, have a little wobble past the officers in Cornwall.
