Anthony Fröhlich - Travel Writer

Another December to remember is upon us and Newquay is chock full of yuletide events. It’s a great opportunity to experience the unique community that comprises Newquay. There are Christmas fairs galore and ice skating so brighten up your Newquay holiday by getting a dose of the Christmas spirit that only Cornwall can provide. Hail Santa!

A Time of Gifts at the Eden Project — Throughout December

The Eden Project isn’t merely Cornwall’s premiere indoor garden -it has much more to offer, especially during December. A Time of Gifts is the Eden Project’s way of encouraging everyone to take part in the Christmas season. Throughout December, you can show off your moves on their ice-skating rink. Additionally, there will be arts and craft activities that promote creativity. Festive eats and treats will also be available at the café. You might want to keep an eye out for lantern processions and Cornish choirs as well.

Santa’s Grotto at Trenance Cottages — December 4 to 5, 2010

The ubiquity of Father Chirstmas in December is practically palpable as he returns to Trenance Cottages for another round of naughty-or-nice interviews. Delicious refreshments, face painting and other activities will make the experience one you won’t forget. There will be a small charge for every child, but this will include a gift. Santa’s Grotto will be open from 11.00 until 16.00, so try to have your wish-list worked out beforehand!

Community Christmas Fayre — December 11, 2010

Converging on Hotel Victoria is the Community Christmas Fayre (fair) from 10.00 until 16.00 on December 11. A large selection of vendors will be in attendance to share their wares with the public. Live entertainment will be provided and festive food, and drink will be available for purchase. Also, Father Christmas is expected to make an appearance.

Newquay Zoo Festival of Lights and Christmas Fair — December 11 to 12, 2010

Everybody loves Father Christmas and everyone loves the zoo. On December 11 and 12, there will be a duet of these aforementioned universal loves. Newquay Zoo is holding its Christmas fair and Father Christmas will be in his grotto ready to get an earful of wishes. Whilst there, you might want to try your hand at home-made crafts or sample some locally produced produce. Be there to try mulled wine and fill your stomach with roasted chestnuts. While there, bear in mind that there will be decorative lights throughout the zoo. Take a self-paced tour of the Christmas-transformed zoo. If you don a festive hat to the Christmas fair, you get £1 off the ticket price.

New Year’s Eve Fancy Dress Festival — December 31, 2010

Kiss 2010 goodbye at the New Year’s Eve Fancy Dress Festival. Don your finest duds or your silliest costume. In either case, ushering in 2011 in Newquay will be one of the best decisions you’ll make (in 2010). Venues throughout Newquay will be open late, so you’ll know what the beginning of 2011 is all about. Whether you’re a reveler, a celebrant or just a normal citizen, you should easily find Newquay the place to be.
