Getting There: Trains, buses and planes are all viable options when it comes to transporting yourself from London to the boot of Britain. National Express coaches win in the cheap stakes but only with super advance bookings. They can also take more than eight hours. Trains from Paddington take around six hours but the clear winner for the time and budget conscious - is the environmentally unfriendly airline option. Advance returns with Ryan Air from Stansted weigh in at £20 . . .

Live Newquay Webcam: If you've never been to Newquay and want to see what it's like then have a look at the live webcam on the Belushi's website.

That's why we got excited about the idea of installing Pod Beds in our hostels. They're compact sleeping spaces that you rent by the hour and they might just be the answer to all those early arrival, pre check in blues. We however want to know what you – the backpacker – think, before we pull the trigger. Read on for your chance to make your voice heard and also for more information about how to work your way across Europe as a travel writer.

Tell us whether you want Pod Beds or not by entering our online poll.

You'll find him at 16 Lower Thames St, London, EC3R 6DX. Tickets cost £25, the closet tube is Monument and the party runs from 8pm until 2am.

King Lear, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, South Bank – Perfomances start at 7.30pm, with select Matinees at 2pm. The first production out of the pen this season is King Lear, which started its run on April 23, 2008. This infamous tale is if course a tragedy where only the peripheral characters are left standing - in order that this might emphasise the poignant and pointless loss of everyone who ever cared about each other. Forgone conclusions aside, this is one of Shakespeare's best and with an accomplished cast lined up, I'd lay money on this being a spectacular rendition of a true classic.

A Sneak Peak

Buzzelli's Berlin – Finally Spring has arrived and Berlin is starting to warm up. The chain of summer festivals that take place throughout Europe, of course include Berlin and almost all of the special events are designed to get everyone outside and having fun.

Jessie's May in Paris – With the arrival of May in Paris you can feel Spring in the air. This is a month to enjoy all the scenery that Paris has to offer by exploring the public gardens located around the city.

Kalon's London Life - Half the competitors - double the excitement. That's the premise of sevens rugby. Basically all the dull parts of the proper 15-a-side game are taken away, like endless penalties, strange rule interpretations and the ball disappearing beneath a human pyramid for minutes on end!

We Need Aspiring Travel Writers

Our monthly travel E-zine is sent to over 100,000 backpackers so it's very important to us that what goes in it is accurate, interesting, well written and useful for our international audience. Our city event guides are very popular and here is a sample from the April E-zine - to show you why!

Buzzelli's Berlin – Kristin Buzzelli lives in the States but vicariously lives it up in Berlin – her spiritual home! This month she lines up the Verzaubert film festival and much more.

Kalon's London Life – Mr Kalon Huett himself tackles the sensitive subject of the Olympics as the torch passes through London in April.

Jessie in Paris – Jessie Heckman lives in the thick of all things cool in Paris. She now serves up this expertise with the first of her monthly events guide from the French capital.

If you think you can match this then send in your 450 word event guide for Newquay, Edinburgh, Bath, Brighton or Bruges – for the month of May! Read on for more about the where, when and what!

Most of the good stuff is going on between 12pm and 7pm. We're talking food, theatre inspired by the culinary treats on display and of course the stomach rumbling aromas of the tasty treats on sale. Here are a few of the stalls you can look forward to:

Their brand new bike tour in the British capital sets out every day at 11am from the North West corner of Hyde Park and it sets out with an aim to inform, entertain and explain! All three objectives are well and truly achieved and true to the backpacking creed, you’ll make new worldly friends from all walks of life too. Amusing en route anecdotes include the secret service, World War Two, toilet based antics of Winston Churchill and a few, little known facts about one particular rebel within the Royal Family. If you’re not convinced yet, read on for a tantalising selection of tour based, literary morsels.

This lovely outdoor treat for spring and summer in London will set you back a mere £15, so approximately €19 or $30. It kicks off from just outside the Queensway Station of the London Underground, which can be located in Zone 1, on the red - Central Line.

Your cycling itinerary takes you through the skaters and pogo bouncers of Hyde Park, down through the solar powered spectators of Green Park to Buckingham Palace, up to the ever eventful Trafalgar Square and then back again.

The tour demographic will most likely include an internationally, interesting mix of travellers and age groups, and unlike other popular tours this bad boy builds in time to appreciate the big sites and have a nice, refuelling, pub lunch too.

Getting to this daily tour from our London backpacking bases is easy. It’s a stone’s throw from our West End hostels in Shepherd’s Bush and Hammersmith and it’s easy to grab an underground train to this backpacker friendly bike tour, from all of our other London locations too.

Check out the London bike tour website for a little more of the where, when and how to book. When you experience first hand just how welcoming, approachable and extraordinarily well informed the guides are, you'll see that this tour is worth every penny (or cent).

Fun Things To Do This Weekend In London

The Bush Theatre – We're looking ahead to a rather special production, starting at this theatre on April 23, 2008. It's called Tinderbox, it's a revenge comedy and it's set in the future when Britain is dissolving into the sea. The centre of this theatrical wonder is a Butcher's shop and a precious one at that.

Shepherd's Bush Empire – On Saturday April 19, 2008, Hayseed Dixie and Instill Appalachian hell-raisers will be playing at the Empire. Great Britain by Lonely Planet

I was lucky enough to bump into Lonely Planet's Tom Hall at the recent TNT Travel Show. I was then lucky enough to hear him wax lyrical about some of the wondrous locations, referenced in this 1014 page, beast of a book. The historical hi jinx and wondrous photography made yours truly a little bit proud to be British. It also me thoroughly determined to relay some of that magic to you. The top ten British destinations in said speech included the breath taking beauty of Ilkley and the Yorkshire Moors, Dartmouth and it's proud naval history and of course the notorious Northumberland National Park. My favourite recommendations however, centred on the British capital and the quirky nooks and crannies that you wouldn't normally come across on the tourist track. A superb, second hand tip - from Tom, to me, to you is Dennis Severs house where the rooms are all artistic, tailor made - time capsules.

Great Britain by Lonely Planet is published by Lonely Planet (paperback; £16.99). It is also available through www.lonelyplanet.com and all good booksellers.

When it comes to the major art museums, they all offer special nights of free admission for 18-25 year olds, from 6pm to 9pm. On Wednesday night see amazing modern artwork at the Centre Pompidou, then spend Thursday night with Monet, Degas and Pisarro at the Musée d'Orsay. Visit the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo on Friday nights at the Louvre.

Kristin Buzzelli's Berlin – Verzaubert! Berlin often has film festivals featuring all sorts of topics. April brings the Verzaubert International Queer Film Festival, one of the premier showcases of gay cinema in the world. Much information is still to come but this festival is assured to offer a varied film program. The festival has venues across Germany, but runs in Berlin from April 16 to April 23, 2008. Costs vary.

St Christopher's and Friends

You can find our fantastic Village hostel on Borough High Street, nestled between the London Bridge and Borough tube stations.

Dates: April 1 – April 6, 2008.
Times: Tuesday – Saturday 7.30pm. Sunday - 4pm.
Tickets: £10, £8 (Concessions for hostellers).

This play involves two delightful characters - Morris and Jean. They've been gambling on the Lottery for years without getting very far but everything changes when they win two million pounds! The question then of course arises – are these good or bad changes?

On one hand you have the misfortune of Morris, but on the other you have Jean who keeps on playing and keeps on winning.

This impressive, small budget play started out in the wonderful Yorkshire stomping grounds of Hull, before moving to Hampstead and then Greenwich.

Check it out all day on Easter Sunday.

Doctor Who Exhibition – Love it or loath it, this is a British, science fiction phenomenon and this exhibit brings you into almost direct contact with the Daleks, monsters and other props from the show. You can find it at Earl's Court - all weekend and tickets start at £7.

Greenwich Playhouse – If you happen to be in our East London residence this weekend, then drag your culture deprived souls to the Playhouse and watch the end of a wonderful series entitled American Voices. The Sunday show is The Americans by Matthew Freeman. In a nutshell, a man alone in his room writes a poem that somehow causes his apartment to explode. Another young man finds his front room windows blown in by wood splinters. Downtown, a third guy steps out of Starbucks to find himself covered with white plaster. Together they search out the source of all this and in the process find an identity in contemporary America. Doesn't that sound nice?

Free Treats From St Christopher's

CLERKENWELL, SHOREDITCH & SPITALFIELDS - This area of northeast London is the city's ground zero of cool, and its success at the expense of other nightlife areas such as Soho continues to astound pretty much everyone. It's made up of Clerkenwell, just north of the City; Shoreditch and its northern extension Hoxton, an area (roughly) between Old St tube station and just east of Shoreditch High St; and Spitalfields, centred around the market of that name and Brick Lane, anglatown's main thoroughfare. Read more.

It's £15 from 7.30pm at The Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith.

Annual Met Police Concert – This is the 62nd concert of its kind and because it's on St Patrick's Day, it's been given an Irish theme! Expect important policemen, Members of Parliament and lots of police bands! It's £12 from 7.30pm at the Barbican Centre.

St Patrick's Day

The History - After escaping from slavery St Patrick worked to convert the Irish people to become Christians (paganism had previously been popular in Ireland). He died on March 17, 461 AD and has become the Patron Saint of Ireland. The chances are however that you'll hear far fewer conversations about this on the day and more about how many pints people have consumed.

The Line Up of Festivities - On March 16, 2008 the St Patrick's Day Parade will see a number of marching bands, from the UK and Ireland, take to the streets – from 12 noon at Hyde Park Corner.

Also on March 16, the St Patrick's Day festival will take place in Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and Covent Garden - with dancing, food, crafts and music. Best of all the festivities are completely free so every spare penny can go towards Guinness!

Some of the festival highlights include the outdoor Ceili Mor in the gardens of Leicester Square, where the experienced and inexperienced alike can dance away the afternoon to traditional Irish music. It's here where you can also get a taste of traditional Irish hospitality in the Café on Trafalgar Square!

So dress up in your finest bright green clothes, make your jolly way to the festivities and enjoy the craic.

Whether you're after a three foot long, sausage dog-style, bunny rabbit, soft toy or an authentic 1940s military uniform with mock medals, you'll find it here.

The Royal Pavilion – When Bath fell out of favour with the royals, the court moved down to this coastal, party hot spot and the opulence that followed is arguably unrivalled - to this very day. Giant, gold encrusted dragons suspend one tonne chandeliers from copper palm tree ceilings and the music room boasts thousands of individually painted, gold sea shells! The tour's not bad either.

The Sea Life Centre – It's a token tourist trap but we like feeding sharks and admiring giant turtles, so we'd pay the modest entrance fee. Living Fossils, super-size Cat Fish and shrimps with the ability to hit you as hard as a bullet also feature here. The tacky toy shop aside, this is a fun way of spending a rainy afternoon in a safe, aquatic, underground atmosphere.

Free Backpacker Resources This March

Backpacker Bites – There's something a little fishy about our ever healthy fitness instructor this month as he looks into oil supplements.

On Sunday we have three films at the bargain price of £3.50 for members, and the not so bad price of £5 for non-members. At 1pm there's Two Day in Paris - A dark romantic comedy about the ups and downs of an international relationship and the temptations along the way.

At 3.10pm Into The Wild follows a university graduate who donates his life savings to charity before hitchhiking to Alaska for a life of wilderness.

Later on at 6.10 you can see I'm Not There. This is the famed plunge into very private the life of Bob Dylan. The star is played by Cate Blanchett.

Ghost of Jack the Ripper. Ten Bells Pub – Ghost Tour

The Ten Bells Pub on Commercial Street is very much like it was back in the murderous days of the Ripper, and rumour has it that this pub still attracts the souls of that era.

The best way to check it out is on an evening ghost tour, but before you book this worth while £6.50 event, read the full, unadulterated tale here.

Shepherds Bush £9.50 Special

Coming up in the March E-zine, the international, travel writing team offer advice on Amsterdam's Jam in the Dam Festival, Berlin's Spandau Spring Festival, St Patrick's Day in London and much more.

Top attractions include props from the TV success, My Boy Jack but if Kim Cattrall's costumes aren't your thing, then there's a great, moving and hands on exhibit about the evacuation of children from Britain's cities during World War Two. Then again if military retrospectives aren't your thing then how about some refined artwork at 2 Willow Road? This is the only Modern Movement house that's open to the public and it's also the former home of famed architect, Ernö Goldfinger. The art-tastic collection here features Max Ernst, Henry Moore and Bridget Riley, and tours run on the hour from 12am onwards. You'll find this place in Hampstead, North London.

The Expert – Kalon Huett is our trusty London travel writer and he's been looking ahead to what's going in this fair city during March. Here's a sneak preview of what you can read for free in the March Live Your Life Travel E-zine: “I'm not for a second suggesting that you, the globe trotting, hard partying, action seeking backpackers from around the world need an excuse to go wild. But on the day of Irish celebrations - St Patrick's Day, you are simply obligated to get out of bed and get started. Sitting around the hostel relaxing and playing cards on this day is strictly forbidden. You might as well burn your European guide book, send your sleeping bag on a cruise down the Thames and fly home, because you don't deserve the honour of the title – Backpacker . . .”

Welcome Stranger to Amsterdam

Getting There – Air travel is getting cheaper than the daily jabs at Britney in the papers, but when you combine a cheap air fare with an even cheaper train ticket - then you're really onto something. Look into flying to Eindhoven and catching a train to Amsterdam. The total ticket price is much cheaper than jetting straight into Schiphol Airport and you can invest the cash you save in a discount pass for all the top attractions.

Discounts – I'm always wary of government sponsored tourism passes because as a rule, these tend to point you towards the most dilapidated and run down areas – in dire need of tourist investment. Fortunately this mentality of regeneration by deception didn't apply to the I Amsterdam Card and at €43 for a two-day pass, it's worth every cent. I used this credit card-esk swipe card to hit twelve attractions and the complimentary transport ticket was great for getting around on the trams and buses. This is especially superb when you don't fancy the 45-minute walk, out of town to the Van Gogh Museum.

Where To Go – There are a lot of great sites to see but the ones you really can't afford to miss are the Anne Frank House, Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder (the Attic Church), Rembrandt's residence and the aforementioned Van Gogh repository. The home of the world's most famous diary keeper is possibly the most moving piece of history you'll ever encounter. Modern media is used to enhance the experience and this is a very poignant tribute to the 100,000 Dutch Jews killed in World War Two. The Attic Church is a breath taking, space saving, Ikea like vision, Rembrandt's House is a very personal way of getting to know the illusionist master and the Van Gogh Museum is worth the trip, just for the sheer scale of the collection.

Village London Hostel

Write For a Night – Be the next Bill Bryson with our monthly travel writing competition.

The Galleon Theatre Company take this schoolboy Shakespeare classic and drag it, kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century. The contentious and contemporaneous Anti-Semitism is relayed with pain-staking accuracy and anyone who isn't the slightest bit upset, when Shylock is broken in the courtroom - isn't human. There are Lion and Dragon races, martial arts demonstrations, food, music, arts and crafts - all on offer at stalls dotted around these free street celebrations.

The Where and When - Most of the action will revolve around the Grand Parade from 11am along the Strand, and also the main stage in Trafalgar Square, from midday until 5:30pm. Unless you're highly adverse to large crowds, or panic at the mere mention of the word Rat, this is definitely a festival worth attending.

As a Dodo is a bit of an online phenomenon, so I'd like to pick apart where it all started. Where did the concept come from and what was it that inspired the fictional obituaries?

A. George - I think it started in a pub like all good ideas. We were sitting around thinking about how we could try and really get out there and move into new areas. We'd been thinking about doing a Blog for a while. It was an idea that started with three of us actually - me, Simon and Paul Mckenzie and so we just started spit balling ideas. Nobody's done fictional obituaries.

Simon - We actually started the website about 18 months ago. George frightened me into doing it. He bought the name and I wrote an obituary for David Beckham's football career - which funnily enough is back in the headlines now.

Ready Yourselves For Something Fantastic and Free

DJ Michelle gets to grips with the Futureheads - The set was launched with Meantime which was quickly followed by The City is Here For You to Use. The heaving Indie loving mass below lapped it up, shouting out song suggestions, with arms aloft and mouths furiously chanting. I however was the weirdo taking notes on the balcony! The band were nonchalant at times but the sweat drenched clothes were a final testament to the effort they put into the gig. They swept through Decent Days and Nights and Skip to the End, and then had an interesting interlude where they sang Deyo with the crowd. This was followed up by Scatman and if that's not entertainment, then I don't know what is!

Edinburgh Hostel Sale

If you're arriving by train into Gare du Nord, then head straight for Line Five of the Paris Metro. You want a train heading for the Bobigny Pablo Picasso terminus. Jump off at the Jaures stop, turn right and walk for a few scenic minutes along the canal until you spot St Christopher's and Belushi's.

2. If you head straight out of the hostel and up the Quai de l'Oise, you will find the Cite des Sciences et de Industrie la Villette. This is the biggest science park in Europe, there's a decommissioned submarine in the grounds and a 180 degree cinema contained within a giant mirror ball. Take note that most of the exhibits are closed on Sundays and Mondays.

3. If you're feeling particularly energetic, pick up a map and walk south from the park to the Pere Lachaise. This cemetery is the final resting place of Delacroix, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and a whole host of monumentally important historical figures.

An Introduction to Paris by Travel Writer John Malathronas

“Indeed, Paris exemplifies the French mentality in a spectacular manner. Its main landmark, the Eiffel Tower, was erected for aesthetic reasons, serving no purpose; compare this with the British uproar over our ‘useless' Millennium Dome.

Where London museums go for a uniform, jail-like brightness, Parisian ones strive to illuminate their exhibits in the optimum way possible – the backlight on the Lady of the Unicorn's tapestries in the Cluny Museum is an art in itself. Every step begs a comparison: Paris is a city with bistrots staffed by waitresses who see their job as a profession for life, rather than an income supplement during Uni holidays. (And what do they do? They offer plats du jour to be consumed at leisure during lunch, rather than sandwiches to be gobbled in ten, hurried minutes).

So, if you want to encounter a way of life that is close and familiar and yet, at the same time, far-flung and dissimilar, go to Paris. Seek out that vive-la-difference moment. Then glory quietly in your discovery."

This area represents the image of the: “naughty Paris” of the 1890s. The tradition began in the 1890's when Pigalle was still outside of the city walls. Parisians came here to drink and party. Inside the city walls wine was heavily taxed and so this district became the cheap alternative. Even though the area has long been absorbed into Paris, the tradition lives on and many Parisians still come here to frequent the many, trendy late night bars, cabaret acts and music venues.

Welcome to Welcome Stranger

Paris – Our brand new hostel is only a matter of minutes from the Eurostar terminus at gare-du-Nord and for your further convenience, we’re laying on free travel guides and tours.

Across Paris you will be delighted to see neighbourhoods lit up with fantastic fairy lights and assorted glowing devices. Dozens of avenues are transformed into a river of light, which runs for as far as the eye can see. Local businesses, residents and illumination experts all pitch in to make this trip-a-light-fantastica.
There's so much more to Amsterdam than the abundance of cafes, waffles and the seedy Red Light District. This is a thriving city that offers a plethora of things to see and do. We've lined up the tastiest treats for you here.

Amsterdam gets Packed – Read the cynically insightful guide to Amsterdam by St Christopher's Travel Editor Rob Savage. In the latest publication he explores red light religion, getting there for less and the cultural hot spots you simply cannot afford to miss.

This Month's Hot Hostel Competition

All you have to do to win is answer one simple question and you could be staying with St Christopher's in Hammersmith – London.

A rather talented young singer hails from Hammersmith. Her songs include Little Things, Alfie, Smile and Everything's Just Wonderful.

What is the name of this feisty female songstress?

Retrospectives

Rob Savage from St Christopher's interviews Bill Bryson – Q. One of my favourite parts of Thunderbolt Kid is the sterile but radioactive toilet seat. What would you say is the modern day equivalent to this?

A. The only thing that I've ever seen, that reminded me of those toilet seats was when I was in Japan. There are these wonderfully technological toilets and I'm sure if I push the right button, I can tell whether you've got haemorrhoids or not. They're quite amazing things but there are so many buttons and that makes it quite scary – you never know what you're going to do.

Our Favourite September Read on the Road - Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman: When Harry Potter came to a dramatic end there was a void left in its wake. Chocolate, caffeine and complex carbohydrates couldn't fill it and I came to the conclusion that a filling literary supplement was required. Northern Lights is exactly that. It's the beginning of a similarly thrilling series, the storyline is fantastically extravagant - yet still believable and the central character Lyra, is lovable because of a tough upbringing and a rebellious streak. Owls are supplemented by friendly demons, Dementors are replaced with armoured bears and in the up coming big screen version, Nicole Kidman replaces Alan Rickman as the token, heavy weight celebrity. The odds against our magical hero are of course insurmountable, the subtle references to the erosion of modern democracy are very much present and the desire to give up sleep in favour of reading is definitely provoked. Move over Potter – this stuff is darker, loveable and a little bit edgier.

The Birth of Beauty Terrorist back in May - It's one thing for backpackers to support the new luggage restrictions, brought in to prevent the terrorists terrorising our mile high industries, but it's quite another to let these measures cause bad breath, body odour and blemishes. That's why this month I took a look under the bonnet of the hot rod hand luggage restrictions and put together a little beauty prescription about what you can and can't get away with, when it comes to hand luggage and European airports.

Travel Writers Wanted - Enquire Within

December's Winner - Entering La Paz from above provided a remarkable view of the urban sprawl below. Location Location Location

If you make a habit of fighting over those front row seats with extra leg room and fold out TVs then stop! Going after these locations – hammer and tongue will more than likely guarantee a prime position next to a screaming baby, incapable of normalising the pressure in its little head by swallowing. You will also more than likely be in a position where you can enjoy the fresh aromas that emanate from a water free toilet. Add passengers queuing for the afore mentioned dungeon of smells and young couples seeking membership in that exclusive mile high club, and you've got a bad piece of real estate. Instead fight for the seats half way down the plane – next to the emergency exits and the kitchen. There are no walls to attach baby cots to here, you are equidistant from the two love dungeons, you get served first on the trolley rounds and it's easier to sleep with extra leg room.

Hot coffee, turbulence, Camilla Parker Bowles and verbally offensive ladies of the night. In that specific order - here's the deal.

If you want to save some pennies en route to the city of sin then it's cheaper to fly to Eindhoven and grab a train from there. Everything was going swimmingly in this respect until my coffee order coincided with a patch of severe turbulence. At that point things actually went swimmingly, minus the milk and sugar - all over my lap. Despite the scalding this was actually a positive and educational experience, especially for the children in the aisle behind me who had their vocabularies expanded with a few, choice, grown up words . . .

Amsterdam is the perfect city for a short visit or a weekend break. It's easy on the eye, with plenty (but not too much) to see; it's compact enough to explore mainly on foot; just about everyone speaks good-to-fluent English, and more often than not more than a smattering of French and German as well; and, last but not least, it's a city that likes to party . . . Read more by subscribing to our free, monthly travel E-zine.

Christmas and New Year in Amsterdam

December 25 - Voidd "kerst" Sessions presents: De Man Zonder Schaduw (GZG A'dam), Moritz, and Esther for a night of Electro, Techhouse and Techno.

Bath is the only place in the United Kingdom where you can find naturally occurring hot springs. These toasty water features not only flow through the Roman Baths but also the luxury treat that is the Thermae Spa.

The settlement has a modest population of just over 90,000 inhabitants and is famous for a delicious little something called the Sally Lunn Bunn. We like this delightful dough and we think you will too so why not grab a bed a try it in person?

St Christopher's Village is Hostel of the Year – 2007!

We'd like to congratulate everyone at the Village for all their hard work and say a big well done to the people who made all these great new initiatives possible.

If you want to see what all the fuss is about then why not book a £9.50 bed in our super sale and experience the Village for yourself. In addition to the great female only facilities, free walking tours and roof top BBQs, we also have a roof top hot tub, a sauna and a great chill out room, which also doubles up as a comedy venue and cinema. Book your bed now!

A Sublime Events Guide

Festive Times in Amsterdam with Kathleen Steeden - Gendarmenmarkt is often the premier Christmas market to visit in Berlin. Bordered by the Berlin Concert Hall and the French and German churches (both have identical domes) this Christmas market does charge an entrance fee - a modest €1. It is well worth this because the Gendarmenmarkt has so much to offer! You can watch traditional craftsmen work on a whole variety of fun things and sample some really tasty market food while you watch the superb entertainment. All sorts of performances go on - including juggling, choirs and a world-class escape artist - all surrounded by twinkling lights, stars and a Christmas tree which festively dominates the square.

Kalon Huett's London Life - Even if you're wearing thermal underwear and drinking endless cups of tea, the fact remains that London in December is really, really cold. So you might as well accept it - embrace it even - by shivering your way down to the annual Bankside Frost Fair in Southwark between the 14th and 16th of December.

It's the largest, free winter event in London and 2007 marks the 400 year anniversary of when Londoners first celebrated the River Thames icing over. Back in the day they charged onto the ice but alas, the fair is now held on the Bankside. While the relocation is somewhat of a shame, one definite positive is the improved safety of the fair where people no longer slip on the ice, break bones and fall through cracks to meet a watery grave.

The Bath Christmas Markets

The Christmas Markets in Bath will be open until December 9, 2007. It has become something of a calendar highlight in Bath and the Christmas crowd isn't short of a celebrity or two.

The more specific market locations include the Kingston Parade, Abbey Green, Abbey Gate Street and the Kingston Buildings. It is open daily from 10am and if you've had enough of shopping then there are plenty of other fun things to entertain your brain with.

We recommend starting with the Roman Baths before heading over to the Jane Austin Centre, the Building of Bath Museum, the Victoria Art Gallery, the Theatre Royal and the Bath Aqua Theatre of Glass. Fun times.

Hot Hostel Competition

Which famous travel writer recorded the audio narrative for the tour of the Roman Baths, in Bath?

These quarry passage ways were filled with bodies when the streets above began to subside. During a time of plague, revolution and cemetery closure – this seemed like the perfect solution.

Smelly Sewers - The sewage system in Paris is 2100km long and is one of the biggest technological spectacles in French history. Extraordinarily it is marked out with street signs that replicate those above ground. You can tour the sewers for yourself but be warned – this is the smelliest museum in Paris! The tour takes you through half a kilometre of the extensive 2100km system.

An Island of Swans - In the middle of the river Seine you will find the Îles des Cygnes - the Isle of the Swans. This was created in 1827, it is 850m long and 11m at its widest point. If you take a walk along the tree lined path of the island you will come to the Statue of Liberty. This statue faces west, towards its larger sibling in New York and was inaugurated in 1889 - three years after the original statue of liberty was given to the United States.

Write For Us

Kathleen Steeden – Amsterdam Columnist

This year's Christmas Lights will be switched on by Lady Helen Long outside the Railway Station at 7pm. Father Christmas is on the guest list too and there will be a parade setting off at 6.30pm. This involves live music, a firework display and drinkies at Newquay Harbour.

Newquay Zoo Festival of Lights – December 9 to December 23

This is a rather special visual event. Here you can gape at the lakeside gardens - bathed in Christmas lights, enjoy a few feeding time talks and encounter all sorts of animals throughout each day. The lights will be switched on here at 5pm on December 9. Santa will also be back in Newquay and hanging out in the zoo grotto on December 9, 16, and 23. The Zoo Carol Service will take place at 3.30pm on December 16 and is followed up with an animal encounter and torch–light tour of the zoo grounds to see the light displays.

Remembrance Sunday

The poem - For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon is often read during the ceremonies. Here is a small excerpt:

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

The November E-zine Hits The Stands

Write Around the World - Find out what happens when you pay ten Euros and cross the border into Albania.

The accumulated anticipation that accompanies you as you enter Lyra's world for the final time is almost palpable. What's harder to get hold of however is a clue about what exactly Mr Pullman was thinking when he wrote the anti-climax to end all anti climaxes. The bad guys do a U-turn and steam head first into a selfless sacrifice, the characters that you get affectionately attached to all survive and Lord above, love saves the day. I realise that the series was didactically written with a teenage audience in mind but if like most young adults your days are spent in a sarcastic, downward spiral of cynicism and realism, then this idealism is more than likely to induce vomit. After the literary ride of your life in The Subtle Knife, this is a disappointing end to an otherwise great run. If however you are hooked after the first two books then integrating your brain with these words is not optional. Read it at your own peril.

The Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman is published by Scholastic (paperback; £7.99). It is also available through amazon.co.uk and all good booksellers.

We reckon that when you're informed you can take charge as you travel and help put a stop to needless cruelty, once and for all.
Give Something Back

Here’s who we’ve been helping over the last three months:

UNICEF – We dispatched travel writer David Haw to the virtual vaults of UNICEF and their new project in Peru. In the true spirit of journalistic integrity he presented both sides of the trip, the ethos behind it and who benefited at the end of the day.

The Maggie’s Centres - Back in the day St Christopher's in Edinburgh got to grips with a bit of fund raising for the Maggie's Centre in Edinburgh. This time out facility for Cancer sufferers has now turned its attention to London where it plans to open a £3.5 million facility. This pricey but essential undertaking is already well underway but they need our help to bring the project to the finish line.

Charity Close to Home – When St Christopher's Director, Franca Knowles faced a fight with cancer we threw our weight behind her speedy recovery. We also supported Neil Kitchen, the remarkable surgeon who saved her life, before moving on to help others with a massive charity cycle for the National Hospital Development Foundation.

Roll Up Roll Up For Some Bruges Based Fun

Top Ten Bruge Based Tips - The object of our affections in the October Top 10 is one of our favourite St Christopher's cities – Bruges. Environmental Underground

When you hit London you can either pay more for the environmentally unfriendly option of a paper subway ticket, or you can do as the Londoners do and invest in an Oyster Card. These plastic travel passes cut down on the trees cut down for regular tickets, they get you half price travel on the London Underground, set £0.90 fares for all journeys on London Buses and they never expire - so your credit still works whenever you return to the British capital.

2. Offsetting Your Offsetting

Offset the carbon emissions from your flight by paying a little extra for your plane ticket. This might mean less money in your sightseeing budget but we in turn we will offset that with our monthly top ten, money saving tips in the St Christopher's cities. This popular E-zine feature includes some top contemporaneous tips such as free comedy nights with the BBC! This broadcasting institution is always on the look out for audience members so for your free tickets be sure to investigate the website.

3. Body Matters

Big name supermarkets offer unbeatable prices because they fly and ship products in from sources all over the globe. They're cheap at the source but by the time they arrive, their environmental cost is most certainly quite pricey. Organic food from local farms doesn't involve major transport emissions and the food is produced using chemicals that aren't as damaging. Most supermarkets stock organic food, but for some super tasty examples take a trip to Borough Market near London Bridge or the Wednesday Markets in Hammersmith.

4. Herd Mentality

If everyone in the world switched off a light at the same time for just five minutes, we could do a lot to reverse the recent sleigh ride into global warming and give the earth a much needed chance to catch its breath. That principle is priceless and shows just how valuable communication is. In the Lonely Planet's Annual Travellers' Pulse Survey 84 percent of people said they would try to counteract their emissions in the future. There was also support for boycotting flying for other less damaging modes of transport, airlines reducing the number of flights, an increase in flying costs (such as a carbon tax) and the idea of everyone having an annual carbon allowance into which they must fit their travel.

5. Get The Look

When you buy new clothes check the label to make sure they're not Dry Clean Only. This process leaves chemicals on your clothes which are then exposed to the world around you - when you wear your finely pressed best. The chemicals can also damage the materials, making it necessary to buy new threads - which brings us back to the carbon footprint of global brands.

6. Make Your Mark In The Office

Make your co-workers, fellow students and backpacking buddies drink they daily caffeine fix from a real mug. Plastic and polystyrene cups are among the worst ingredients in the world's ever
