Wicked Events in the UK this June
The Festival Circuit
Summer time means music time. Yup, its festival season again and this month has 3 of the biggest in Europe, right here in the UK - The Isle of Wight Rock Festival, Download Festival and Glastonbury!
The Isle of Wight Rock Festival: 10-12 June
The Isle of Wight Rock Festival is one of southern England's biggest music festivals, welcoming top acts to Seaclose Park in Newport on the little island a few miles off the coast from Portsmouth. Headlining in 2005 are REM, one of the biggest rock bands in the world, Faithless, one of the premier international dance acts and Razorlight, new to the big time in 2004. The Isle of Wight Festivals that took place in the late Sixties are legendary, featuring performances from Bob Dylan, The Who, Free, The Doors, Joni Mitchell and Jefferson Airplane, culminating in 1970 with 600,000 hippies descending on the island to see Jimi Hendrix perform his penultimate concert.
Download Festival: 11-12 June
Running over three days at Donnington Park, Download features some of the best acts spanning the entire rock music genre - from the old-school metal of Black Sabbath to the newer hybrids that System of a Down and Slipknot provide. The line-up also features the Game On event, bringing a true punk and skate rock element to the proceedings. The weekend gets progressively heavier with the relatively mellow Feeder and Garbage opening on Friday. Saturday sees the legendary Ozzie Osbourne taking the stage with Sabbath, following sets from Velvet, Revolver and HIM. On the Sabbath itself it's the turn of System of a Down, Slipknot and Slayer.
Glastonbury: 24-26 June
Glastonbury, the UK's biggest, best and most famous music festival, is back with what is sure to be another great programme for 2005. Headliners include Brian Wilson, Van Morrison, The White Stripes and New Order. Organised by Michael Eavis, it has been held on his property, Worthy Farm in Somerset, since its inception over 30 years ago. Initially inspired by the Bath Blues Festival, the Glastonbury Festival was first held in September 1970 and has grown from a 1500-person event to one that now attracts over 150,000 people.
