E-zine September 2007

LIVE YOUR LIFE NEWSLETTER

Editor's Note - September 2007:

Welcome to another jam packed edition of the Live Your Life travel E-zine. Contained within the virtual pages of the September publication there are some rather delectable treats for travellers with all sorts of tastes.

In this month's Interview Time I caught up with the cast of The Vegemite Tales and grilled two rather famous Neighbours stars (Stew and Tad) about Kath and Kim, cattle prods and a whole manner of weirdly wonderful topics.

The crew over at the Lonely Planet office have been in touch again and as a special treat they've sent over a massive, informative and free extract from their guide to Lisbon.

In This Month's Hot Hostel Competition I'll be giving away free accommodation and theatre tickets in Bruges, there's the insider take on Northern Lights in the Top 5 Traveller Reads, Beauty Terrorist combats climate change and the Top Ten gets back to where it started from with some great money saving tips for trips to London.

Just in case that isn't enough food for thought we have a Canadian spin on things from Erin Kelly in her competition winning Write Around the World travel tale, Ethical Travel delves into the forgotten world of Leprosy, Music Mashup reviews the summer festivals and our ever healthy Backpacker Bites does a spin on the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz when it goes after a healthy heart.

Add to that stew some great theatre reviews and a little insider knowledge about what's going down in Amsterdam and you have the sum of our parts. Between you and me, next month is going to be even better with a special follow up focus on backpacking in Bruges and a few first hand Portuguese travel tales, but in the mean time enjoy this free literary treat, listen to our latest Podcast and read through the second St Christopher's column, in the September / October issue of Packed Magazine. Happy trekking.

Write around the world: Travel story

Write for a night: Canada, Crossing the Divide

The winner of this month's Write Around the World competition is Erin Kelly. She tickled us silly with her witty account of the unspoken cultural points of difference that crop up when you cross borders. We now know never to make the mistake of calling Canadians American, ice hockey is referred to purely as hockey, Tim Horton's coffee is universally bad and when it snows it gets warmer rather than colder. Some of these might be sweeping generalisations but they're an entertaining example of what happens when international friendships

Female Travel : Beauty Terrorist

Surviving severe conditions

The speculation seems to be over because the evidence our climate is changing is now everywhere. Summers spike too early and the bitter winters kick in before Autumn even has a chance to get going. The fall out for your skin and your various extremities is therefore concerning and that's why Beauty Terrorist is fighting back with an easily affordable prescription for maintaining the body beautiful. Don't give into chapped lips and under-nourished epidermal layers. It's not what nature intended.

Tell us your top beauty tips when you hit the open road. Just send them to us at submissions@st-christophers.co.uk.

Travel Charities

Maggie's Centre - Cancer Charity

Back in the day St Christopher's in Edinburgh got to grips with a bit of fund raising for the Maggie's Centre in Edinburgh. This time out facility for Cancer sufferers has now turned its attention to London where it plans to open a £3.5 million facility. This pricey but essential undertaking is already well underway but they need our help to bring the project to the finish line. Please do what you can and read on to find out just how you can lend a helping hand.

We're here to listen about the charities that matter to you so send us an email  submissions@st-christophers.co.uk

Travel Book Extract

Lonely Planet - Lisbon

In today's international age of cheap flights, tempting destinations, gap years, secondments and general time out it can be tough to narrow down where you want to go and what you want to do. That's why we decided to ask Lonely Planet where they've had a good time and what they'd do in a top European destination. Lisbon was on their list and they were kind enough to open up their font of travelling knowledge for general backpacker perusal. Read on for the free highlights from Best of Lisbon.

Top 5 Travel Reads

Reads on the road

Move over Mr Potter. Hogwarts is officially concluded and we dedicated day dreamers need another fantastical adventure to focus our affections on. Step up Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman. It's dark it's demon filled and the central character is a little less wet from the outset. The Top 5 also serves up some top travel writing in the angelic forms that are The Sex Lives of Cannibals, the Best of Lisbon from Lonely Planet and Singapore Swing by John Malanthronas. To round off this eclectic mix there's also a little literary digestif entitled Letters to a Young Poet. This review is definitely an eye opener for any aspiring writers out there.

We've been getting lots of info about what you are wrapping your eyes around so why not share it with your backpacking fellows? submissions@st-christophers.co.uk.

We found free Scottish Dancing lessons, a taste of Bhangra, Tai Chi, ethical reading with Amnesty International and much more.

Helping Broken Lives

Leprosy is something you associate with disesead colonies and the plagues of yesterday. The modern day reality is somewhat different and Jen Page takes you on an essentially informative tour of its current condition. This month's ethical correspondence also has an unabashed account of an Australian charity called New Hope. In a nutshell New Hope are working to stamp out Leprosy once and for all and detach the false cultural stigmas from this curable disease, so read on to see what they're doing and how you can help.
