Night Time Treats
A great treat after dinner is a Caddies and Witchery Tour. They kick off at 9.30pm and are led by Adam Lyal (deceased) and his equally departed and overly affectionate monk friend. Family Guy impressions aside, this is a comically riotous way to learn about the city's gory past and how the plague, witchcraft and body snatching shaped the settlement. The pick up point for the tour is outside the Witchery restaurant on Castlehill.
Educational Beer Drinking
If you like a good drink and love a good book then the Edinburgh Literary Pub Tour is definitely something you should build into your travel budget. This is a brilliant, witty and dramatic romp through the wynds, courtyards and pubs of Edinburgh, and it's led by professionally trained thespians. In short it's a great introduction to the socially lubricating watering holes of the Old and New Town.
Independent Itineraries
A fantastically memorable and completely free experience in Edinburgh is the Royal Mile. A saunter along this road takes you from the castle, all the way down to the Queen's royal abode - Holyroodhouse Palace. En route there are some great sites to see, a plethora of kitsch cafes and the John Knox House at the Scottish Storytelling Centre. This is the oldest mansion on the Royal Mile and was home to Mary Queen of Scots.
