Charities

This month I gave David - our superb charities correspondent, a well deserved break from his relentless research and writing. In his absence I took the opportunity to bring to your attention, a cause which is very close to the hearts of everyone at St Christopher's.

Jessica Taylor's Story

13-year-old Jessica Taylor was diagnosed with a brain tumour on August 1, 2007.  Since this date Jess has undergone 3 operations, 12 weeks of chemotherapy and 32 sessions of radiotherapy to her spine and brain.

During the initial operation Jess suffered a minor stroke which has affected her walking and balance. She is currently receiving physiotherapy so that she can hopefully reverse or improve this.

Jessica Taylor's Hopes

Jessica and her family are fighting for a clean bill of health but they aren't just focusing on beating cancer at home. Their aim is to raise money to equip the Kamran's Ward (Children's Cancer) and the Melanie's Ward (Adolescent Cancer) at The John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

They want to install computers with wall mounted flat screens - which will allow young people seriously affected by cancer and receiving treatment, to have contact with the outside world during lonely treatment times.

How You Can Help Jessica Taylor

The Jessica Taylor Media Rooms Charity Fund is already well on its way to doing the good it originally set out to do. The total raised so far has reached almost £20,000 in three months!

With so much achieved so far, the decision was made to raise the bar and help even more people. The original target was £25,000 but now that has been doubled to £50,000. This is the goal for the end of 2008.

Over the next few months the family are organising a number of charity events and activities. The next confirmed event is on Saturday March 8, 2008. This is at The Hazlemere Community Centre, UK (8pm – 11pm) when you can dance the night away to the Mersey Echoes – a brilliant band with a very authentic 60s sound. Tickets are only £8 each and anyone interested should telephone 07860 269329 or e-mail: dahuddl1@btconnect.com

If you can't make this you can still help by making a donation to the Oxford Radcliffe Hospital. Just send a cheque payable to Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals (Kamran's Ward Fund) to the fundraisers:
