Music Mashup

DJ-Michelle Summer is upon us ladies and gents – so start hoping the sun holds from the next weekend until September! And have no fear because come rain or shine I'll be here to provide the best music gossip and event guides. Let me start by introducing Indigo Brown and having a peek at the Adulthood soundtrack.

Indigo Brown

Indigo Brown is made up of two singer - song writers named Nayla and Soul, who I just happened to see at the Gina Yashere show. Gina herself was so impressed by their performance at a dinner party that she brought them on tour with her. If you don't know who Gina Yashere is – then shame on you! In a nutshell she's one of the finest female British comediennes ever to grace Hackney Empire, but this is a music column so back to Indigo Brown. They started their performance with a cover of Bob Marley's Waiting in Vain, which stilled the at times raucous crowd with the sheer size of their sound and talent.

Soulful to the core, these ladies put me in mind of the Angie Stone and Jill Scott type songstresses. They then proceeded to perform some of their own tracks entitled Excuse Me and the BBC nominated Dear Diary. Now I've checked out their MySpace page but to be completely honest, I don't think their talent is showcased well here. I've seen them perform live and their voices were brilliant - but on MySpace their songs sound decidedly average. Subsequent research has also shown that they've been well received in the Jazz Café so use the MySpace page purely to see when they're performing.

Adulthood Soundtrack

Now we all now I'm a big fan of urban art, music and film. This means I'll be one of the first in the queue to see Adulthood - the sequel to the 2006 film Kidulthood. I of course had to check out the soundtrack ahead of this. Director Noel Clarke asked Bashy - a well known MC on the urban circuit to help him compile the soundtrack. Indeed Bashy performs the film's signature track Kidulthood to Adulthood.

The UK Hip Hop heads will see the character Nabs is a familiar face - he's otherwise known as UK rapper Plan B and gets great exposure with two tracks on the soundtrack. The soundtrack features new up and coming UK talent alongside tracks by more established artists such Tinchy Stryder, Wiley and Dizzee. Also there was a MySpace music competition to be featured in the film – won by Smart Kid and the track Doing My Fing, featuring BNG and Stranger. It's an upbeat track which in addition to Sway's F UR EX, uplifts the soundtrack's sometimes depressing flow.
