Europe's Famous Hostel

Salzburg Yoho Hostel

Not only is the Yoho (Youth Hostel – get it?) a ten-minute walk from the bus drop off in Hauptbahnhof, it's also a hostel with some awe inspiring views. Top floor abodes boast views of snow drenched mountains, regal yellow homes and quaint little streets - that lead to all the fun things.

It's also the perfect base for commuting to Oktoberfest. You get there and back in a day on a cheap as chips train and it's a nice cosy, non–tent like treat after a hard day of rocking.

What To Do

The Sound of Music Tour: Austrians hate the world's most famous musical but when you're in Salzburg it would be criminal not to indulge in this classic tour. It's narrated and sung by a wonderfully cynical Brit called Trudy, you get to sample the best apple strudel in town and you can buy beer on the bus. Add to this a melody of kitsch sing alongs, a wonderful mix of travellers and the breath taking views of Wolfgang Lake, and you're laughing!

Mozart's Music: Contrary to popular belief Austrians do not eat Schnitzel with noodle, they don't yodel at every opportunity and they do not love what Julie Andrews did for their international stereotype. One thing they do however have great pride in is the music of Mozart. The Mozart Concert Dinner demonstrates this perfectly and if you're lucky enough to be travelling with a significant other, the candle lit courses, between live operatic singing and orchestral masterpieces provide the perfect romantic backdrop.

You can read more about the Yoho in Salzburg and then some in the next issue of Welcome Stranger Magazine, due out across London on May 19, 2008. It's free from tube stations, gyms and restaurants.
