Music Mashup

Dj Michelle

Hello scenesters. Carnival weekend sees me heading to the Shoreditch Electro extravaganza - Eastern Electrics, a 48 hour rave that's right down my street! Check out my reviews of Timeout New Music, Rinse FM's 14th birthday, albums by JME and Sara Bareilles, and the latest place to catch the best in new Urban music – Iluvlive!

The Reviews

Timeout New Music: I was very excited when a friend of mine managed to get tickets for the latest installation of Timeout New Music, primarily because it featured my favourites - Zombie Disco Squad and Rattus Rattus of Urban Nerd. The venue was the Vortex Jazz Bar in Dalston and the tunes were great, but alas they were severely let down by the P.A. system, ill equipped for the bass heavy music. The tunes were distorted throughout the night and the engineer who was supposedly upstairs – did nothing to remedy it.

Rinse FM's 14th Birthday at The End: Rinse FM is one of the biggest pirate radio stations in London and it's only right that they celebrated 14 years of transmission in style with a massive line up at The End. I of course was there in all my neon glory to shake a leg or two. It was amazing to see all the members of the Pay As U Go crew reunite and perform, and Slimzee was back on the decks where he belongs. The best of Garage, Grime and everything in between was played in jammed rooms where Skream and Benga later brought the house down. It seems that Dubstep goes from strength to strength!

Recommended Listening

JME - Famous? Now JME is a regular fixture on the Grime scene and recently released his first album Famous? The track that stood out the most for me was Sun, Sea, Sand - a song that will embody the summer of 2008 for all the Malia and Ayia Napa crowd. It's an upbeat track that describes the best summer holiday ever and I think that it'd do well if released as a single. The track Power features Westwood declaiming JME as a super showerman. Boogiedown Bass is another tune that really stands out, illustrating his many music influences with backing tracks similar to Missy Elliot's style.

Sarah Bareilles: There's often a tussle over the FM dial on the kitchen radio at my place. Yours truly prefers pirate radio, Housemate 1 likes BBC Radio 4 and Housemate 2 likes Capital Radio. So it was when listening to Capital that I came across Sarah Bareilles. Her album is filled with poppy songs that sometimes try to delve deeper than they really are - but on the whole there are some pretty good tracks on her eponymous album. I'd recommend Love Song, Vegas, Love on the Rocks and the Massive Attack inspired track - Come Round Soon.

A Gig Not to Miss

Iluvlive: This is a monthly night that showcases the best in up and coming urban music. It's lead by no other than Ras Kwame with support from MTV Base and Trevor Nelson's show - The Lick. Last month it was held at Favela Chic in Shoreditch and has featured Tinchy Stryder, Miss Dynamite, Taio Cruz, Sway and many more. It is the place to find genuine new talent, so all you music lovers take note.

You can catch the next one on September 1, 2008. This is also Roll Deep's album launch party and will feature Mc Donaeo - who the funky House lovers will know as the singer of Devil in a Blue Dress. New artists set to dazzle include Danielle Senior, Mphfo Skeef with her electro tinged beats, and Kerry Leatham who promises to provide some ambient, guitar based Soul. Check out the MySpace for more information on this and the equivalent gigs in Birmingham and Bristol. It's not just a London thing.
