Looking Ahead to Prague

St Christopher’s Inns and the Czech Inn of Prague are all set to open their joint hostel and hotel in Prague ‐ 2010, but before that we thought we’d give you a heads up about all the good stuff going on over there! For Halloween 2009 the Czech Inn decided to get down to the sound of Reggae ‐ all for a very good cause. On All Hallows Eve people from far and wide came along, dressed in their finest costumes to support La Strada ‐ a human trafficking prevention organisation, based in Prague. The ensuing Halloween Monster Bash dominated the much loved brick, cellar basement where local music sensation Ting ‐ sent waves of Reggae into every corner. Here’s a little more on what happened and why!

La Strada Charity Fundraiser with Czech Inn

The Partnership

Guests at the charity event

The celebration was a creative effort to kick start the Czech Inn’s partnership with La Strada. To get the ball rolling, a silent auction was held with 100% of the proceeds going directly to La Strada. Prizes up for grabs included a weekend in one of the Czech Inn’s newly‐renovated double en‐suite rooms, accommodation at many hostels across Europe, creations from local artists, dance lessons and more! Starbucks also sponsored the event and brought along an abundance of coffee to be handed out, in exchange for charitable donations.

Irena Konečná, the National Coordinator of La Strada came along to the event to tell everyone a little more about just how much their help meant. She said: “This fundraiser and celebration is a first for La Strada. It's also a first for the Czech Inn. We look forward to many more events that spring up from this partnership and friendship.”

More Information on La Strada

La Strada - European Network against Human Trafficking

La Strada is a non‐governmental organisation, founded back in 1995. It was one of the first members of an international network that now operates the Netherlands, Poland, Bulgaria, Belarus, Moldova, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Ukraine.

The work done by La Strada is based on the basic principles of respect for human rights, equal opportunities, non‐discrimination, empowerment and the promotion of the interests ‐ of trafficked persons.

Another Good Cause ‐ TOMS Shoes

Stay tuned for more information about good causes in Prague because there’s a partnership with TOMS Shoes in the pipeline. TOMS Shoes was founded on a simple premise ‐ for every pair purchased TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need ‐ one for one.

The history of this one goes back to 2006 when traveller Blake Mycoskie came across a group of children on a trip to Argentina. Blake found they had no shoes to protect their feet and he wanted to help. From here he created TOMS Shoes and the one for one principle. In the same year Blake returned to Argentina with a support crew and 10,000 pairs of shoes!

Since then TOMS has donated more than 150,000 pairs of shoes to children in need and because of the support pledged so far, there are plans to give 300,000 pairs of shoes to children in need ‐ around the world in 2009. Soon you’ll be able to do your part at the Czech Inn too ‐ which is set to become an official vendor of said shoes.
