Single of the Month ‐ Wiley and the England 10, She Likes To
Long term readers of this column will know that I like to liken Wiley to Hip Hop producer Pharrell. They both produce completely innovative beats and take unknowns, and introduce them into the mainstream. However unlike Pharrell, Wiley has not achieved the acclaim he is due in the UK ‐ but his luck might be about to change. Never one to rest, Wiley has gone ahead and launched a new single on his Eskibeat Records label, called She Likes To. This features the England 10 ‐ not footballers but the hottest grime MC’s on the scene. She Likes To features Bashy, Ghetto, Wretch32, Griminal, Chipmunk, Scorcher, Ice Kid, Wrigley and J2K. This is definitely an infectious party song, despite the boring video, and with the right promotion it could easily reach the Top 10 in the music charts.
Review of the Month ‐ N‐Dubz
Now many of you will be familiar with the music of N‐Dubz after being subjected to it on the tube or bus, via some teenager’s mobile phone speakers. Their latest single ‐ I Need You is getting heavy airplay on both music TV and the radio so it’s also pretty hard to ignore. Despite their ghetto‐tastic wear and the attitude, first album Uncle B is filled to the brim with underground hits ‐ including Feva Las Vegas, Ouch and I Swear. Most adults won’t’ be able to relate to the street morals they sing and rap about, in fact N̴Dubz singer Dappy recently said in an interview with Q magazine: “If you’re over 26 you’re not going to get our music.” Like Chipmunk and Tinchy Stryder ‐ they’re young but commercially savvy and they’ve used their street kudos to garner a loyal following. Sadly with this rise comes the expensive record deals and flashy music videos, and out goes the musical integrity.
New album ‐ Against All Odds, has just been released and features songs with Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and unusually track number eight ’ No one Knows, is produced by Gary Barlow. N‐Dubz are currently touring the country with the second track from the album ‐ Playing with Fire, which features Mr Hudson for the sake of pulling in all the Dance crowd! I’ll be there at Shepherd’s Bush Empire on December 10, 2009, for the N‐Dubz Christmas Party featuring Master Shortie and Tinie Tempah. N‐Dubz aren’t to everyone’s taste but I’m willing to give them a try!
Gigs To Go To
JLS at the Hammersmith Apollo, March 4, 2010: You’ve probably heard a lot about JLS. Their tunes are constantly played on the radio and you might have found yourself singing along to their catchy pop / r‘n’b ballads. As the first black boy band in the UK, they show just how much times have changed with legions of fans up and down the country. Despite missing out on the X Factor record contract like Girls Aloud, this has done them no harm and tickets for their Hammersmith Apollo gigs have sold out. However another date has been added so if you want to see what all the fuss is about, you can.
Love Music Hate Racism ‐ Christmas Party and Fundraiser, December 15, 2009, at the Proud Stables
Love Music Hate Racism have had a busy year with the BNP gaining several seats in the European Parliament and I think we’ll all agree that organisations like Love Music Hate Racism need as much support as we can give them ‐ to help raise money for next year’s crucial campaign against racism, and the BNP. What better way to do this than going to a party? Taking over the uber trendy Proud Stables in Camden for one night only, some of the best musicians in the UK will come together to help you dance the night away and raise money for a good cause. Expect Bashy, Mpho and Kid British to be there, among others.

It’s getting nearer to Christmas and the nights are long and cold so let’s hope that you have some fresh new tunes to keep you revved up. And if you don’t ‐ here’s my guide! In this month’s edition you can expect reviews of Wiley, the lowdown on N’Dubz, the best bits of boy band JLS and last but by no means least, the Love Music Hate Racism, Christmas Party and Fundraiser.
