1. The Imperial Palace of Schoenbrunn
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a beautiful baroque palace surrounded by magnificent gardens. Here you can easily lose yourself for an entire day, but do plan on spending at least half a day visiting the palace, meandering the paths up to the Gloriette for its sweeping view over the gardens, palace, city and west towards the Kahlenberg, and Leopoldsberg on the edge of the Vienna Woods. Try your skill in the maze or visit Europe’s oldest Baroque zoo ‐ one of the finest in Europe. This one is a 15 minute walk or a 5 minute tram ride on number 58, from the hostel.
2. The Back streets in the Old Town
A wander around these streets is a great way to see the real Vienna so maybe start out at St Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) - one of the most important Gothic buildings in Austria - in the very heart of the city. On a clear day, exercise your heart muscle and hike the 343 steps up the south tower for a terrific view over the city. This is just five minutes away from the hostel on the U3 line from the Westbahnhof. From here head on to the impressive Hofburg Imperial Palace, dating back to the 13th century. This has been the residence of kings and emperors for many centuries and today it’s where the president of Austria lives! Beyond that it’s home to the Sissi Museum, the Imperial Apartments, the Lippizaner horses of the Spanish Riding School and the chapel where the Vienna Choir Boys sing at mass on Sunday mornings! Add to that the Imperial Treasury and the National Library, and you guys are going to be busy! Take your time to stroll through the complex of buildings, smell the roses in the Volksgarten and feel the old school power of imperial Vienna!
