Dirty Canvas
Dirty Canvas was THE Grime night to be at a few years ago, however the last get together suffered from a change of location, away from Rhythm Factory ‐ where it had enjoyed great success. Instead it took up residence in some poncey, warren like bar on Brick Lane with an appalling early closing time of 1am! Now seeing as most Grime MCs live in a different time zone to the rest of us mere mortals, such an early closing time and the new location were guaranteed to have an effect. In short, an empty venue.
The Dirty Canvas massive did however celebrate their fifth birthday in Cargo on May 22 and with garage DJ extraordinaire EZ as the headline act, and the crème de crème of the Grime and dubstep scenes having made a very public show of support, Dirty Canvas might just be on track to make a recovery.
Morrissey
Now I have never been a fan of the Smiths, nor a fan of ole misery guts Morrissey ‐ in fact I prefer to ignore the thrall that they held over some people back in the day. However on one fateful Bank holiday weekend I was driving to sun kissed Brighton and a delightful tune came on ‐ Charming Man. I was seduced further by the eighties sound ‐ so reminiscent of The Cure, and the kooky lyrics. Further listening made me realise that me and ole misery guts could perhaps get along ‐ if only for ten minutes at a time! So take yourself to Morrissey’s website and catch up with his current tour dates. He was last spotted in London at the end of May.
Kingdom of the 90s ‐ Warehouse, June 6, 2009
You’ve gotta love the eighties right? Shoulder pads, bouffant hair and lots of lycra ‐ does it get any better? Unfortunately back then I was young, foolish and disdainful and instead ended up embracing the nineties. We’re talking Tupac, UK G, dodgy waistlines and somewhat bouffant hair. If you too liked the nineties then this Kingdom night is something that you’re going to love. Who can forget tunes such as Ebeneezer Goode, Rhythm of the Night and Scatman after all?
Kingdom of the 90s is a one off event in some dodgy East London warehouse but it promises to deliver all the nineties nostalgia that you could possibly desire. Go along and be taken back to all those seminal teenage moments, and a time where you thought Boyzone were the best group ever. Macarena anyone?
