Arctic Monkeys ‐ November 5, 2009
It’s official ‐ the Indies are invading! There’s another British sensation sweeping across Paris but this one is due greatly to the undying fan base of the Arctic Monkeys. The fans of this band started a MySpace page without their knowledge and before they knew it ‐ they were an online hit! Throw in a few major recording deals in both the UK and the US, and the chances are that people are no longer asking ‐ Who the F**K are the Arctic Monkeys?
Venue: Le Zenith, 211 Avenue Jean Jaures, Metro: Porte de la Villete
A‐Ha ‐ November 10, 2009
Look out because Norwegian sensation A‐Ha are on their way to Paris to ‐ take you on! They’re launching their world tour next year but in the mean time they’re warming up their chops with a string of shows before the end of 2009. The fact that this band have sold over 35 million albums since the eighties is often overlooked, but such a solid foundation surely means that they’ll have no problem, picking up where they left off.
Venue: Bobino, 14‐20 rue de la Gaite, Metro: Edgar Quinet or Gaite
Armistice Day ‐Jour de l’Armistace, November 11, 2009
The anniversary of the end of World War One is observed with prudence in France. The day the Versailles Treaty was signed between Germany and the Allies was November 11, 1918, at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The gravity of this day bares the weight of the millions who died in the war so as a mark of respect, expect most shops in Paris and some of the big museums to be closed.
Muse ‐ November 17, 2009
How often is it that you get to see Honorary Doctorates of Art performing in a live rock show? Now Muse have seen their fair share of accolades and awards however, a PhD in music isn’t too bad! This multi‐award winning band offers more than just sell out performances. They sell out performances in aid of the Teen Cancer Trust and they’re set to play for the upcoming Children in Need concert, at the Royal Albert Hall in London. That’s not to mention the fact that they’re double booked to headline at the O2 Arena on the same night! Hats off to these guys for all the charitable work, in aid of so many great causes.
Venue: Palais‐Omnisports de Paris‐Bercy, Metro: Bercy
Beaujolais Nouveau ‐ November 19, 2009
Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé! With only ten short weeks separating the grapes on the vine and the drink in your glass, the whole world celebrates the wine of Beaujolais Nouveau! Not to be sold a minute before midnight on Thursday November 19, 2009, the tradition of drinking this very young wine dates back over a century. Beaujolais is a region in France just south of Burgundy and from this region comes one of the most festive wines, ever created! At this time of year Paris comes alive and every bistro, restaurant, and bar is filled with Parisians celebrating the vintage, uncorking thousands, and thousands of bottles of wine ‐ on this very night. In fact, by the time this world wide celebration comes to a close, over 65 million bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau (that’s nearly half of what was produced this year) will have been consumed. That my friends is one hell of a party!
Venue: All over Paris
Miró à Warhol ‐ The Berardo Exhibit
I wrote about this collection back in February however I’d like to keep this fine exhibit current for all art lovers, travelling to Paris. Available for the first time ever outside of Portugal, wealthy Portuguese entrepreneur José Berardo has donated part of his impressive collection to the Musée du Luxembourg. This collection offers a rare opportunity to view over 75 incredible pieces of art, ranging from early Surrealism to post war Realism and Pop Art. If you’re an art lover or even if you have a mild appreciation for pretty pictures, this collection is a must see. The Berardo Collection has in fact been cited by Le Monde as: “The collection that can compete with the Tate Modern in London and the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, it is the finest of its kind in Portugal.”
Venue: Musée du Luxembourg Metro: Luxembourg
