Easter Markets - April 9 to May 1, 2011
The main Easter markets in Prague are held in the two big squares - Old Town and Wenceslas, although if you take a stroll around the town you will stumble across smaller markets too. There are plenty of stalls for you to explore, they offer anything from wooden toys, hand painted Easter eggs, puppets and Czech crystal to all kinds of food and drink. What could be better then walking around with a pint of ice cold beer and some roast pig! Be careful on Easter Monday ladies because this is when Czech men might try to chase you with a whip made out of braided osier twigs. It's a Czech tradition and a good whipping will protect you from illnesses and bad spirits!
Does It Offend You, Yeah? - April 10, 2011
This British band is hard to categorize as they take anything from Electro, Punk, Indie, Synth-Pop and New Rave, and make it into a crazy and highly entertaining mix. 2008 was their breakthrough year, their debut album got great reviews and they went on a sold out US tour. They’re now on tour with their second studio album and will stop by Prague, performing at Lucerna Music Bar on April 10th. The band is known for their energetic live shows that often involve stage diving and broken instruments. The lead singer once broke his leg during a concert and managed to give an encore before being taken to the hospital. Now that's devotion! Tickets are 450 CZK in pre-sale and are available through Ticketpro offices.
Belle and Sebastian - April 18, 2011
The Scottish band Belle and Sebastian will bring their cute Indie Pop melodies to Roxy club on April 10. They formed in 1996 and are currently on tour to support their eighth album, Write About Love. The support bands for their European tour include Those Dancing Days or Zoey Van Goey. The support act for Prague is yet to be announced so it must be something special! You can get your tickets for 550 CZK through Ticketpro.
Festival of Taste, Smell of Spring - Until April 21, 2011
This food festival gives you the opportunity to try some of the best restaurants in Prague for a very reasonable price. There are 19 restaurants involved and each has prepared a menu that will cost you 300 CZK, for a main course and one drink. You might also get an appetizer or a dessert thrown in there too! You can register and reserve your table on their website (w) www.festivalchuti.cz. where you can also see photos of the menus, and your chefs!
Witches' Night - April 30, 2011
Witches' Night AKA Paleni Carodejnic, is an ancient festival that celebrates the end of the winter and return of the spring. On the night of April 30th, people gather around hillside bonfires and burn witches - well, figurines made of branches and rags. Other traditions include young couples leaping over the dying embers of the bonfires together and single men leaving freshly cut branches on the doorsteps of the ladies that they're interested in. An unofficial celebration of this - popular with expats - is held on the Petrin Hill.
