SURVIVAL TIPS

  • Don’t offend Locals understand French but are offended when tourists assume that Bruges' native language is French, it is actually Flemish/Dutch!
  • Sunday closures Avoid shopping on a Sunday as retail is always closed.
  • Tipping Tipping isn’t expected in bars but in restaurants a tip of 10% is the norm
  • Carry cash Many bars and restaurants do not accept card payments.
  • Horse carriages Watch out for these. Most horses don’t know the traffic rules…
  • Cheap beer Check out the hostel’s Belgian bar where you can sample local beers on the cheap
  • An authentic night out Bruges offers a variety of bars (see map) that deliver an authentic Flemish experience.
  • Walk Pretty much everywhere in Bruges is within walking distance, so don’t worry about transport.
  • Cycle Rent a lime green bike from the hostel for €10 a day or €6 for 3 hours.
  • Don’t get ripped off If you’re asked to pay over €2,30 for a regular beer or over €3 for a waffle, get outta there!
  • Getting there for €3 The quickest and cheapest way to reach the hostel from Bruges station is to take the 6 or 16 bus until you reach 'Kruispoort' bus stop.
  • For out of this world waffles Go to the waffle van that stands in Burg Square opposite the County Hall or Chez Albert.
  • Boat rides A great way to see Bruges differently is to take a 20 minute boat ride for €8.
  • Beer Tasting The hostel offers a nightly beer tasting all year round (with a minimum of 5 sign-ups)
