When visiting a new city for the first time, it’s always settling to know where you’re dining before you venture out in search for grub. It means you can book a table in advance, work out the route, or scope out a cuisine you’re craving. And while Bath is brimming with excellent street side cafes and restaurants, it’s helpful to take recommendations. Here’s our pick of Bath’s best affordable restaurants, each one with its own USP...

Heading to Bath and want somewhere fun and affordable to stay? Check out right in the city centre

FOR BURGERS:

BELUSHI'S

9 Green St, Bath BA1 2JY

If you’re looking for a hearty meal in the form of juicy burgers, fries and more-ish bar snacks then Belushi’s will sort you right out. Serving up the best burgers in the city, this sports bar and student favourite will refuel you after a tiring day of sightseeing (and will leave you craving more whether it’s onion rings, nachos, wings or chicken tenders).

Belushi’s is right in the heart of the city, within a short walk of pretty much all of the main sites from the Royal Crescent, Bath Abbey, the Jane Austen Centre and the Roman Baths - so it’s perfectly situated for when your hunger hits. The reason the burgers are so damn good? They’re handmade daily, using 100% Red Tractor assured Scottish Beef, the secret to their fresh taste. And if you need a place to party or pre-drink before hitting the town, Belushi’s bar offers cheap jagerbombs, happy hour, beer pong, live DJs and a club atmosphere at night.

FOR SOMETHING HEALTHY:

THE GREEN ROCKET

1 Pierrepont St, Bath BA1 1LB

Every vegan knows that it’s tricky trying to find vegan options in a new city. Well, we’ve scoped out your go-to veggie spot so you don’t have to. The Green Rocket is one of Bath’s best vegan cafes. The Green Rocket’s award-winning menu is filled with healthy options with a twist, using organic ingredients. Enjoy dishes such as sweetcorn fritters, superfood salads, tofu stir-fries, courgette Bolognese and even coconut cashew curry. Non-veggies love it too because the food is just that good.

Think fresh, vibrant food and healthy juices that make for a perfect hangover cure. The healthy, hearty breakfasts here are also worth trying. The interior is cute and quaint, with a friendly atmosphere.

FOR SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT:

YAK YETI YAK

12 Pierrepont St, Bath BA1 1LA

This is one for the foodies. To get a taste of authentic Nepalese street food, head to Yak Yeti Yak, a family-run restaurant in the centre of Bath. On the menu you’ll find traditional dishes from delicious chutneys, momos (Nepalese dumplings) daal, spicy fish and meaty curries - it’s like taking a journey through Nepal on your plate.

The spices and flavours in the food will make your taste buds dance around your mouth. The traditional dining experience involves low tables and floor cushions to sit on while you eat (or chairs if you’d prefer). The fragrant, zingy menu makes it one of our favourite places to dine in Bath (and it has vegetarian and vegan options)

FOR AFFORDABLE PUB GRUB:

GARRICK'S HEAD

7-8 St. Johns Place, City Centre, Bath BA1 1ET

Just a stone’s throw away from Bath Abbey, you’ll find the cosy Garricks Head. Here you will find all the British classics: Fish N’ Chips, Pie of the Day, steaks, a selection of sandwiches and soup! Or pop in for Sunday lunch and indulge in a roast dinner. Comfort food at its finest, and at a decent price. Not to mention its vast selection of beer and ales. In the summer, it has a lovely outdoor area where you can sit and enjoy your meal with an ale or glass of wine.

FOR THE BEST PIZZA:

THE REAL ITALIAN PIZZA CO

16 York St, Bath BA1 1NG

Pizza lovers will not be disappointed at The Real Italian Pizza Co, a family-run Italian restaurant right next to the Roman Baths. This joint makes its pizza the proper Italian way (thin with crispy crusts), so it’s no wonder they are award-winning. Serving up traditional wood-fired pizzas in a light, cosy relaxed environment this is the perfect stop to treat yourself to a delicious meal. There is a vast pizza menu to choose from, so you’re sure to find your favourite toppings. The lasagne here is also divine.

FOR AFTERNOON TEA:

THE REGENCY TEA ROOM

40 Gay St, Bath BA1 2NT

When in England, you can’t miss out on a classic afternoon tea experience. Did you know the Queen enjoys afternoon tea once a day, every day? We added afternoon tea in this list because you can definitely substitute lunch for afternoon tea - it’s very filling. In Bath, there are several options to get good quality scones, sandwiches and teas - we recommend The Regency Tea Rooms inside the Jane Austen Centre for top-notch English scones and a choice of 15 loose-leaf teas (or champagne if you’d rather have a boozy afternoon).

Totally Instagrammable spread, too. If you’re a literature lover (and Jane Austen fan) we recommend visiting the Jane Austen Centre anyway, where the tour finishes in the Regency Tea Rooms (or you can go to the Tea Rooms without doing the tour if you’d prefer).
