While you can take your yoga mat anywhere in the world, ahead of International Yoga Day on 21st June we’ve decided to round up some of Europe’s most yoga friendly cities where stretching into downward dog is as common as Brits drinking tea or the Spanish eating tapas. Yoga is such an important activity for so many people that it has become part of our culture and daily routine - so why skip it while travelling? Unwind, clear your head and de-stress at these Best Cities in Europe for Yoga Lovers.

BARCELONA, SPAIN

Let’s start with the Catalan capital. Barcelona is one of the best places in the world for yoga lovers. If you’re looking to enjoy the city and slot in a few yoga sessions while you’re travelling, then Barcelona’s chilled out vibes make the city super relaxed for any yoga lover. With all that beach to make your own, all you need is a yoga mat and a bottle of water to get started. If you’re looking for a yoga studio in Barcelona to loosen up and clear your mind, there are plenty of affordable options. At Yoga Studio Barcelona, students can book their first class for just €7 or 3 classes in one week for €12. Or you can try MyYoga Studio too. There are even some amazing yoga retreats that you book yourself onto if you fancy making yoga the main focus of your trip. Check out  Yoga Weeks !

Another awesome spot to get away from the busy city to do some yoga is Bunkers Del Carmel (pictured above). This is an incredible place to clear your head with amazing views of the city in front of you.

HVAR, CROATIA

If you haven’t been to Croatia, it’s a yogi’s paradise, especially on the port island of Hvar. Warm weather, the sound of crashing waves, beautiful coastline and just overall good vibes. What more could you ask for? There’s an awesome yoga retreat called  Suncokret  which has been rated one of the best retreats in the world. You can choose whether or not you would like to go on the 6/7 day yoga experience or pay nightly and enjoy yoga for a day or two with accommodation included (which is the much cheaper option). Have a look into it and see if it’s for you. Either way, we know that Hvar is dreamy so you can always go and do yoga solo in a quiet place by the sea if you don’t want to pay for a retreat.

BERLIN, GERMANY

Hitting Berlin this year? Well, have no fear if you’re a fellow yogi. Yoga is quite the craze in Berlin which means you’ll never be too far from a yoga studio in the urban city. The German capital is known for being innovative, modern, hipster and a bit edgy, so we’re not surprised that yoga is so popular with Berliners who love a bit of spiritual healing. The best yoga studios in Berlin are Yoga Sky, Sun Yoga (where you can practice hot yoga for €23 a day), Yoga Klub (€11 per hour) and Jivamukti which offers a modern form of Hatha yoga (€13.50 for an hour). Because yoga is so popular in the city classes tend to get quite busy so make sure you book ahead to guarantee your spot.

Need a hostel in Berlin? We have two in the heart of Mitte.

SARDINIA, ITALY

This beautiful Italian island lends itself perfectly for a yoga-filled trip, mainly because of the beautiful backdrop and surroundings that you’ll be graced by. The lush, mountainous landscape and incredible coastline means finding your zen won’t be too difficult here. Find a nice spot on the coast, roll out our yoga mat and start your warrior positions. There are countless yoga retreats you can try in Sardinia, just have a look online and there will be plenty to choose from ranging from affordable to more expensive. Sardinia could be the place for you if you’re looking for your dream yoga retreat.

LONDON, ENGLAND

Did you know that one in four 16-24 year olds practice meditation or yoga at least once a week in the UK? Yoga is extremely popular in London, and while there may not be beaches in this concrete jungle to practice your downward dog, the city plays host to countless yoga events, workshops, classes, rooftop yoga, yoga in the park, hot yoga, pregnancy yoga and much more. London embraces yoga more than most cities around the world and we can guess why. The busy lifestyle of Londoners and the non-stop work culture calls for yoga to de-stress and realign your chakras.

There are some really cool, funky places to do some yoga in London such as the  Sunday Yoga  in Hyde Park. Fancy more places to do yoga alfresco? Well, rooftop yoga is a pretty big thing in the city, especially in the summer months so if you're looking for a great rooftop spot check out  this page .

SANTORINI, GREECE

Santorini is one of Europe’s most beautiful locations however it’s known for being pretty expensive (especially the yoga retreats). For us backpackers on a tight budget, you'll be pleased to know that if you’re a yoga lover, the  Caveland Hostel  in Santorini is an affordable place to stay where you can really relax. You can take part in the staff run yoga activities at this hostel rooftop whilst enjoying the fuschia flowers and beautiful views of the village near Fira Town. The cool thing about this hostel though is that the rooms are located in modern, well-preserved caves - but this isn’t an article about the coolest hostels in Europe.

The beaches of Santorini are also amazing to practice mindfulness and yoga because they’re just so gorgeous - we recommend heading down to the beach at sunset with your yoga mat.

AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS

Health and wellness is a big thing in Amsterdam so it’s easy to see why yoga is so popular. However if you’re visiting the city, it’s not the kind of place you can just whack out your yoga mat or you may be at risk of being run over by a bike (unless you pay a visit to one of the city parks). If you’re planning a trip the Dutch capital and can’t stand the thought of going a few days without yoga, then don’t you worry. Locals in Amsterdam are so into their yoga that there are so many options from rooftop yoga, Hatha workshops and even Yoga by the Water for €10 with yoga instructor Jo. Just make sure to bring your own mat to one of her sessions.

The city has plenty of affordable yoga classes that won’t break the bank. The perfect pick-me-up after a busy day of sightseeing, or an energising way to start your day of exploring. Check out the  Best Affordable Yoga Classes in Amsterdam for Backpackers .
