Vegan food isn’t all leaves and and raw vegetables, especially when in the city of Barcelona where plant based options and health foods are the new craze. Whether you're after vegan tapas, a vegan breakfast or vegan friendly pizza, the city is home to plenty of joints to satisfy your needs. If you're a vegan in the city, we've got you covered with our round up of the best vegan restaurants and cafes around Barcelona.
1 VEGGIE GARDEN
Carrer dels Àngels, 3, 08001 Barcelona, Spain
Your new favourite vegan restaurant in the Raval neighbourhood, right in the centre of Barcelona. Veggie Garden is an awesome vegan restaurant that really experiments with colour, flavours and different cultures. This restaurant is a real trip around the world for your taste buds where you can try colourful Indian Thali’s, Nepalese Momo, Shiitake noodles, Mexican wraps, biryanis and more. You can also order vegan burgers, tapas and salads. The best part is that Veggie Garden is just a 7 minute walk from the St Christopher’s Inns hostel so our vegan guests are sorted.
2 EL CAFE BLUEPROJECT
Carrer de la Princesa, 57, 08003 Barcelona, Spain
This laid back cafe is a lovely place for breakfast or lunch and it’s located in a contemporary art foundation. Specialising in raw goods, we recommend the raw bread sandwiches and raw coffee. The meals in this artistic spot are fairly small but are well presented and taste fantastic. El Cafe Blueproject is all about 100% organic food and 100% vegetarian and vegan so if that’s what you’re all about, pay a visit here.
3 TERESA CARLES
Restaurant Teresa Carles is all about making healthy food that tastes great. Named after the chef herself who has had over 30 years of experience of health food industry in Spain, every dish is one of Teresa Carles creations. This place is not just great value for money, the vegan and vegetarian meals are mouth wateringly good. Open until 11pm, stop here for a comforting dinner with some drinks. The bright, airy, contemporary atmosphere makes it the perfect spot for enjoying great food that’s good for the body. Tasty, Healthy and Sustainable are the four cornerstones of this restaurant. We recommend the vegan lasagne, the vegetable tempura or the vegan tapas. Yum.
4 BIO BENTO
Carrer d'Ermengarda, 34, 08014 Barcelona, Spain
Don’t judge this hidden gem from the outside. Bio Bento is a healthy cafe serving up delicious plant based grub to eat in or takeaway. While the name of the restaurant suggests Japanese cuisine, the offering is actually a range of pretty much everything. Soups, tacos, falafels, courgetti, yummy cakes and more. Inside, it’s light and cosy with some hearty, comforting food choices.
5 CAT BAR
A vegan beer and burger bar. Can you think of anything better? Vegans can do junk food too, it’s just not as bad for you. At the Cat Bar, they don’t take reservations so you can just walk in and get a table. There is a fantastic menu here with a big variety of different vegan burgers you can try, plus the vegan beer will have you returning for more. Despite the names, they aren’t actually any cats at this restaurant.
6 FLAX & KALE
At Flax & Kale 80% of the menu is vegan and it’s one of our favourite joints in the city. Being the sister restaurant to Teresa Carles, you can expect the same high standards of cooking where everything is suited to Flexitarians. The perfect place to head with your friends if some of you are vegans, vegetarian or pescatarian. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside
This was the first Flax & Kale restaurant in the city, there is also another branch called Flax & Kale Passage in Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella which we also recommend for tasty vegan pizzas.
Hiding down a street in Gracia, this tiny takeaway is the perfect vegan pitstop. The shop serves Spanish tortilla only which are made vegan by using chickpea flour, and they're still said by many to be the best Spanish tortilla in Barcelona! Each slice is only €1.50 meaning you can get a totally vegan lunch for seriously cheap while exploring the city.
Order a slice (or two) with some hummus and take it away to munch on in the Placa del Sol while watching the world go by. The simplicity of this charming, local eatery is vegan heaven!
Bet you'd never expect to find a totally veggie Chinese restaurant in the heart of Barcelona, right? Vegesana right by Barcelona University is a vegetarian hotspot with plenty of vegan options. The place is only quiet, but the food is delicious and extremely affordable at just €10.90 for three courses, a drink and a coffee or dessert! Make sure to try the Yuxiang eggplant dish if you get the chance to go!
