There’s nothing Ana loves more than a coffee in hand at the crack of dawn, sitting in a quiet spot outside. But if she’s away from her hometown in Croatia, that’s even better! When she’s not travelling she’s a Graphic Designer, creating fun, cool designs for different Croatian brands. The travel and fashion lover stayed with us this summer in our Berlin Mitte hostel for a weekend exploring the city’s history and relaxing by the Spree.

Read on to discover more about St Christopher’s Innsider Ana from Instagram account Fashion Around Ana , from her dream destination to a piece of travel advice we think every budding traveller should listen to.

What is your dream destination?

My wish is to visit Malta, I am very excited about it. Malta looks like a very interesting island, the nature is amazing and there’s so much to do there. I am planning to go there for my birthday but it will all depend on the situation with Covid. Japan is also on my wish list, I really admire their culture, heritage and their lifestyle. This trip will wait a bit longer.

What is an essential item you never go travelling without?

I never travel without my mobile phone and camera because I want to capture as many moments as possible, and of course it helps me to produce content for social media so that people can discover new places from my Instagram feed.

Best meal you’ve ever had on vacation?

When traveling I always like to try local food. It's a must. One of my favourites is haggis, a Scottish national dish that is prepared by washing and cooking sheep offal (heart, liver and lungs) and then grinding it together with oatmeal, pepper and spices (one of which is nutmeg). This mixture is often minced through a meat grinder and then beef stock is added to it. The taste and it's texture are simply stunning! The dish is traditionally served with mashed potatoes.

I recommend all to try haggis, I haven’t eaten something that is so delicious in a long time! So, try it!!

What is your best St Christopher’s Inns memory/experience?

Waking up very early (even on vacation) is my favourite habit, so while staying at St Christopher’s Inns’ Berlin Mitte hostel I spent my mornings on the terrace and enjoyed drinking coffee in peace and silence. When the sun was rising, I would jump into the hostel’s pool. And of course, there was an amazing view of the whole of Berlin from the rooftop terrace.

What’s your funniest travel story?

Does anyone else find that the funniest stories are mostly related to the situations when you urgently need the toilet and there isn’t one in sight? Last year in Bratislava after midnight, my husband and I were running for 20 minutes back to the hotel as all bars, clubs and restrooms were closed. He really needed the toilet… You cannot imagine how that 20 mins looked like, but he managed!

What’s the best way to meet people when travelling?

Hostels, for example, are great places to meet people. It is easy to get in touch with others as hostel guests are usually very open and it's a pleasure to get to know them.

I meet new people on trains, buses, and during sightseeing. I always have something to ask, I am very curious by nature and meeting new people and culture is my passion. Sometimes they approach me when I take photos or videos...

How to best remember the trip?

The best way to collect memories is to take pictures and videos. Today's technology is advanced so the sky's the limit! This way you can go back to that place anytime you wish and feel it all again.

What city will you always happily go back to, and why?

Hvar is the place where I spend summer time with my family. I feel special there as, with all the island’s nature, it’s like going back to the roots of life. Hvar has the most beautiful beaches and clear sea I’ve ever seen. Plus, you can smell the perfect scent of pine forest and listen to the soothing song of crickets.

What’s your best piece of travel advice?

You are never 100% ready to travel, you will never have enough time, enough money, enough information, you just have to go and adapt along the way. The best moment is now.
